Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-08-18  OrangeTulip: Nice Queentrap by Euwe. For sure he knew how to attack!

louispaulsen88888888: The long sideways queen move is often overlooked
May-03-22  Brenin: 24 Ng5+ Qxg5 (24 ...Kg8 25 Qxc4+ with mate to follow, or 24 ... Kh6 25 Qh3 mate) 25 Qh3+ Kg8 (25 ... Qh6 26 Bxh6) 26 Qxh8+ Kxh8 27 Bxg5 and White is the exchange and a pawn ahead.
May-03-22  mel gibson: Fairly easy. Took me 5 seconds.

Stockfish 15 says:

24. Ng5+

(24. Ng5+(♘f3-g5+ ♕f6xg5 ♕b3-h3+ ♔h7-g8 ♕h3xh8+ ♔g8xh8 ♗c1xg5 ♘e7-c6 ♖a1-e1 ♖a8-c8 c2-c3 ♘c6-b8 f5-f6 g7xf6 ♗g5xf6+ ♗f8-g7 ♔g1-g2 ♘b8-c6 ♖e1-e6 ♔h8-g8 ♗f6xg7 ♔g8xg7 ♖f1-d1 ♖c8-c7 ♔g2-g3 ♔g7-f7 ♖e6-e4 b7-b5 ♖d1-d5 ♖c7-b7 ♖d5-d6 ♖b7-c7 a2-a4 a7-a6 g4-g5 ♘c6-e7 ♔g3-g4 b5xa4 ♖d6xa6 ♘e7-d5 ♖e4-e5 ♖c7-c5 ♖e5-e1 ♖c5-b5 ♖a6-a7+ ♔f7-f8 ♖e1-f1+ ♔f8-g8) +8.27/36 201)

score for White +8.27 depth 36.

May-03-22  Brenin: Euwe could have played this combination a move earlier: 23 Ng5+ Qxg5 24 Qh1+ etc, an even more spectacular attacking move by the Q.

perfidious: <Dion>, how very often I have done so, tho not this once.
May-03-22  raymondhow: I found the right line pretty quickly, but had doubts because was only winning the exchange. Rather amazing that a world champ would miss it on the prior move. Maybe this was a simul?
May-03-22  saturn2: The white queen is under attack but escapes after the Zwischenschach 24.Ng5+

24...Kh6 25.Qh3 or
24...Kg8 Qxc4 or
24...Qxg5 25.Qh3 Kg8 26.Qxh8

May-03-22  agb2002: White is a pawn up.

Black threatens cxb3.

The position of the black king suggests 24.Ng5+:

A) 24... Qxg5 25.Qh3+ Kg8 (25... Qh6 26.Bxh6 + - [Q+P vs b+n]) 26.Qxh8+ Kxh8 27.Bxg5 + - [R+P vs n].

B) 24... Kg8 25.Qxc4+ and mate in two.

C) 24... Kh6 25.Qh3#.

May-03-22  geeker: "Rather amazing that a world champ would miss it on the prior move. Maybe this was a simul?"

Euwe was about 18 years old (not sure of the date of the game) at the time. Doubt it was a simul.

May-03-22  AlicesKnight: Not hard to see the tempo-gaining check, clearing the Q's rank. Winning the exchange should be enough.

23. Ng5+ Qxg5
24. Qh1+.
It's easy to miss.

  Teyss: <Brenin> Well spotted.
It's not (future) World Champions' best day today.
May-03-22  TheaN: The lines have been described by <Brenin> in full. Interesting desperado combination though: you do have to see that throughout the three followup checks, White's queen remains en prise, yet so does Black's, so eventually you exchange Ng5 for Rh8, how weird that may seem at first glance.

chrisowen: I wader out Ng5+ had dab accomodate bivi like dutch free queen h3 pang check courage h8 to pa ghoul vim eddy had road in cudgel ciao duff hat Ng5+ add quo.
May-03-22  TheaN: <chrisowen: like dutch free queen> Not sure if Maxima agrees with that.

  chrisowen: <TheaN:> Hark
May-03-22  ndg2: Harl, Triton, hark!
May-03-22  King.Arthur.Brazil: Black has played very risky against Euwe, maybe underestimating him, but his trouble started at apparently passive move 18...♕f6. If Black tried: 1. 18...♘e3 19. ♕e4+ ♘f5 20. ♘f3 with a threat of 21.g4. 2. 18...♘g3 19. ♖e1 h5 20. ♕d3+ followed by 21. ♖e6+ 3. 18...♖d8 19. ♕e4 ♕g3 20. ♘f3.

So, it seems that Black initial attack hadn't get enought to keep this resulting weak position, so White has the opportunity to explore the ♔ exposure.

May-03-22  whiteshark: Young Euwe (18y) finished 4th w/ 7/11 pts behind Wilfred Hugh Miller Kirk (9 pts), Frederick Brown ? (7.5 pts) and Harold Burton ? (7 pts)

scormus: Not difficult to find the text line, as one would expect on a Tuesday.

I was intrigued by the alternative 24 Qxc4, which looks to retain all the threats and come away with more than just R for N. But B can limit the damage by 24 .... Rc8, and force Q's off after 25 Qb3 Qb6+. It's still clearly better for W, but B could fight on for longer.

What if 25 Qd3 instead, to avoid Q exchange?
Interesting but it gets a bit messy, with potential counterplay for B if W persists with keeping Q's on e.g. 25 .... Kg1 26 Bg5 Qxb2 27 Bxe7 Bxe7 28 Qd7 Rxc2 29 Qe8+ Kh7 30 Qh5+ Kg8 31 Qh5+ ... draw
