Jun-10-13  JohnTal: After Khalifman's 15th, Thorsten is in no place to complicate the issue. His #1 priority needs to be K-side castling. I would have played 15 .. Nc5 and allow loss of the c-pawn for a Q exchange or even simply trade the c5N for the B on a6. At some point, e6 would need to be played followed by a B move and 0-0. Anyway, T gave us a great finish. Still, T had few good options.

Phony Benoni: OK, I just checked with Bozo 0.5, my chess engine, and there is indeed a forced mate in 9:

<21.Ra8+ Nb8 22.Rxb8+ Qd8 23.Qxb6!>

23.Qc6+ also works, but this is cleaner.

<23...Qxb8 24.Qxb8+ Kd7 25.Qb7+ Ke6>

25...Kd8 26.Be3 and the bishop's entry will mate quickly.

click for larger view

<26.Qc8+! Kd5 27.Ke2!>

And Black can do nothing about 28.Rd1+ Ke4 29.Qc2#. If 27...Ke4 28.f3+ and 29.Rd1#.

Of course, since this is Monday simply finding 21.Ra8+ is sufficient for the Holy Grail of a Full Point.

Jun-10-13  agb2002: White has one rook and one pawn for two knights.

Black threatens 21... Qxb7, 21... e6 (protecting the queen) and 21... f6 (to let the king escape).

The knight on b6 is overworked because it protects the black queen and the squares a8 and c8.Therefore, 21.Ra8+:

A) 21... Nxa8 22.Qc8#.

B) 21... Nb8 22.Rxb8+ Qd8 23.Rxd8+ Kxd8 24.Qxb6+ + - [Q+P].

Jun-10-13  M.Hassan: 21.Ra8+ Nxa8
22.Qc8#
Jun-10-13  Jimmy W: Ra8+ leads to mate.
Jun-10-13  jahhaj: White plays only pawn moves from 5 to 13. I love it when Black plays a dubious opening and White shows it no respect at all.
Jun-10-13  RookFile: He had a chance to play ...Nxc3. Not that he has a wonderful positon, but he might have played that one. It's not like the ...Nb6 and ...Nc8 plan scared white to death.
Jun-10-13  Nick46: <Phony Benoni ... Of course, since this is Monday simply finding 21.Ra8+ is sufficient for the Holy Grail of a Full Point.> Thanks for reassurance.
Jun-10-13  morfishine: (1) <21. Ra8+> Nxa8 22.Qc8# or

(1a) <21...Nb8> 22.Rb8+ Qd8 23.Rxd8+ Kxd8 24. Qxb6+ or the one I like:

(1b) <21...Nb8> 22.Rb8+ Qd8 23.Qxb6

Jun-10-13  whiteshark: <Bozo 0.5> Bozo the engine is superfluous – Are we going to confuse him with Bozo the District Attorney? Bozo the Pope?

;D

Jun-10-13  Cemoblanca: A very powerful performance by "Khalif The Man".

10...a5! was definitely better than 10...c6?

Jun-10-13  Abdel Irada: <whiteshark: <Bozo 0.5> Bozo the engine is superfluous – Are we going to confuse him with Bozo the District Attorney? Bozo the Pope?

;D>

An early and imperfect version of the clown who would one day become famous, <Bozo 0.5> turned out to be a strong chess analyst, but apparently this failed to amuse circus-goers, who went from the circus in droves until the upgrade was complete.

Said early attendee Schnef Schniffelgröb, "He just wasn't funny."

Jun-10-13  mistreaver: Monday. White to play. Very Easy.21.?
White anounces mate.
21 Ra8+!
A) 21... Nb8
22 Rxb8+ Nc8
23 Qxc8+ Qd8
24 Qxd8 mate
B) 21... Nxa8
22 Qc8 mate
C)
21... resigns!!
Time to check.
----
Okay, i missed that black can give knight and queen for a rook to avoid mate, but still....
Jun-10-13  zb2cr: 21. Ra8+ does it.

If 21. ... Nxa8; 22. Qxc8#.

If 21. ... Nb8; 22. Rxb8+, Qd8 and Black's material loss is sufficient to guarantee a White win.

Jun-10-13  goodevans: Starting with <10.a4>, Khalifman launches an assault on the Q-side that exposes black’s vulnerabilities. A few moves later black is into desperation measures with <19…Rxb7 20.Qxb7 Qd5>.

The best black could have hoped for was <21.Qxd5 Nxd5 22.Ra8+ Nb8 23.Rxb8+> so was he really hoping to defend the position the exchange and a pawn down without any compensation? In any case the soon-to-be World Champion puts him out of his misery with a much quicker finish.

Jun-10-13  kevin86: The black knight must guard c8 and a8-but alas,it can't do both! Rook checks at a8 and q mates at c8.

instead of a queen sac-there is a rook sac and q mate.

Phony Benoni: <whiteshark> <Abdel Irada> I'm of the age and mentality to remember "Chessman Comics" from the 1970s; John Watson was one of the authors. An "advertisement" featured the Bozo 0.5 computer, which upon command would march its king to the center of the board, committing "Bozocide".

I identified with this. The engine is actually a 20th century version of Crafty that came with my copy of ChessBase about fifteen years ago. Yes, I'm a closet Luddite.

Jun-10-13  dumbgai: Talk about a total demolition. Black quickly falls behind in development and space, and leaves his king in the middle of the board.

chrisowen: A dutiful rambling rook do brave assualter b7 you,

lent i knight bogged down for heading b6 off in d7,

too at go a 28.ra8+ one live cruise a wave in rook up a jaguar on it enter in a8+ engine jam cobble in,

o 21...Nxa8 22.Qc8#. Alternatively ah in booby prize,

for black hale light rook ignoble free success a8+,

good knight back in a 21...nb8 at took it brink,

once aye good to go 22.Rxb8+ queen in delve room,

it now in a oomph change bob a job scouted d8queen in joy it hobble in a jostle around king ha be trapped light down in jail for having I think it is mate in manage 5#.

Jun-10-13  Alex56171: My first choice was the line, 21.Qxd5, followed by 22.Rd8+. Intuitive, pragmatic and enough to win.
Jun-10-13  perfessor: I actually had trouble with this one until I finally noticed that White's a-pawn was missing. Unlike most problems which are easier than OTB, this one would have been simple OTB, since I would have seen the a-pawn disappear...

gawain: This is another nice twist on one of the usual Monday themes. Black's back rank is vulnerable. White wins with 21 Ra8+. I like the way the White Q on b7 shields the rook from capture by the Black Q
Jun-10-13  LJLMETAL: Black's best defense is

21... Nb8
22. Rxb8+, Qd8
23. Rxd8+, Kxd8
24. Qxb6 1-0

perfidious: Black's King found himself quite unable to escape into the folds of his kaftan.
Jun-10-13  Patriot: 21.Ra8+ Nxa8 22.Qc8# - very cool!
