 | | woldsmandriffield: click for larger viewThe brothers grim. DB erred with 73 f7? (73 h6 +-) and RB returned the favour with 73..Ra8? 74 Nf6 1-0 Since Black has ..Rf1+ available to snare the new Queen, the calm 73.Kd7! saves the game. |

 | | FSR: One thinks of Donald as the "lesser" Byrne, but he outscored Robert +3 -1 =4 in the database. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... Robert's only win was in their first game in the database. R Byrne vs D Byrne, 1949. |

Jan-20-23 | | goodevans: The pun is certainly topical even if the game isn't. I guess there just aren't enough interesting games going on in the Wijk aan Zee Masters and Challengers tournaments that would make worthy GOTDs. |

 | | HeMateMe: A bit of a topical pun, huh?
As FSR points out it is a bit of a surprise seeing Donald Byrne holding the edge in classical results. I guess RB was a bit of a late bloomer. I love DB's 60. RxB. Apparently the two Knights working together were more valuable than having the Rook on the board. The game seems to have a middlegame very common at the club level, center closed, a lot of maneuvering to find an effective breakout. |

Jan-20-23 | | thegoodanarchist: In case anyone was wondering, "Byrne Baby Byrne" was already submitted for GOTD title: R Byrne vs D Byrne, 1958 So "spare" me any objections. :) |

 | | FSR: <tga> <Byrne Baby Byrne> was one of the first puns of mine that chessgames used, back in 2011. R Byrne vs Evans, 1965. |

 | | HeMateMe: I tried that too, years ago, but was blocked. I was thinking of a musical that came out in the early '80s about political turmoil in Chicago. Jayne Byrne had been elected mayor and was widely unpopular. She got canned after four years. A musical was written in honor of her troubles, <Burn, Baby Byrne> or maybe it was <Byrne, Baby, Byrne>, I forget the specifics. |

 | | piltdown man: Excellent, topical pun. Reminds me of a spoilt, bitter, redheaded nitwit....Hewitt is his name, I think?? |
|
Jan-20-23 | | Messiah: <goodevans: <I don't get this pun.> https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertai... Yea, the local Hungarian media is also full with this thing, but I cannot see any kind of relevance between the game and the book (or the situation around the book). |

 | | paulalbert: I think the only connection is that the Byrnes are brothers, but no situation similar to William and Harry other than if the older died the younger might get some family property that would have gone to the older. Not the same as events making you suddenly becoming heir to the throne of England. |

 | | HeMateMe: Well, fortunately for chess there WAS a spare, as Donald Byrne, a chain smoker, died young. |

 | | perfidious: One would imagine that the lupus Donald Byrne contracted in his twenties did nothing to help his life expectancy, either. |
