 | | Phony Benoni: This is where it would be helpful to be Harry Potter. We'd just say a magic word, the bishop on e4 would disappear, and we could play 16.Qh7#. However, we must use for conventional methods, such as 16.Bd5+. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | saturn2: Bxc6 gets the rook for a knight and a pawn but is there something better? yes...Bd5 gets the queen for the knight. |

 | | Penguincw: Happy birthday, to me! Today, I turn 5 years old. :) (I'm talking about <cg> birthday, of course) So nice to have my birthday on the Summer solstice. That means sunlight 24 hours in the South Pole! This puzzle though. Okay, the Monday puzzle was tricky, and here, this Tuesday puzzle, I totally missed. The closest I came to solving this puzzle was a check on the a2-g8 diagonal, and an h7 check. Or maybe it's just me.
But seriously, when <anyone> thinks that last week's <Saturday> puzzle is easier than the <Tuesday> puzzle, there's something wrong. Maybe it's with that person. I can only imagine what the rest of the week will hold. And it's the Holiday week too. I bet Freeman got kidnapped and replaced by the Grinch... |
|
Dec-22-15 | | diagonalley: short, and to the point... (as befits the winter solstice... roll on summer!) |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | perfidious: Simple yet lethal clearance which wins the house. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | stst: Interesting fork again!
16.Bd5+
(A)...................QxB or Kh8
17.Qh7#
(B) Be6 (delay only one move, why?)
17.BxB+ then same as (A)
(C)...................Rf7 (this is close to non-sense - self-pinning !!)
17.BxQ then still the R will be out.
A < Monday POD. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | stst: Could be also interesting if Black is allowed to move first as in the given position. .........PxN is obvious
Bh7+ Kf7
Qg6+ Ke7
BxP+ etc
the K hunt should prove eventful too?! |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | gawain: Neat. 16 Bd5+ opens the diagonal for the queen to reach h7. Black can stop 17 Qh7# only by 16...Rf7 (allowing the King to escape to f8) but this loses rapidly anyway. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | agb2002: White has an extra pawn.
Black threatens 16... hxg5.
The bishop on e4 blocks 16.Qh7# and Black's royal family lie on the a2-g8 diagonal. Hence, 16.Bd5+: A) 16... Qxd5 (or 16... cxd5 or 16... Kh8) 17.Qh7#.
B) 16... Rf7 17.Bxa2 wins. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | nalinw: ??? I must have thought it was a Thursday
I came up with
16. Ra1 trapping the Queen
and if
16. .... Qxa1
17. Qb3+ leading to a smothered mate!
Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill!! |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Found a second best but amusing shot: Ra1, Qxa1; Bh7+,Kh8; Bg8 threatening two Qh7 checkmates. Ra1,Qe6; Bd5,hxg5; Bxe6+,Bxe6 only loses the Queen for two pieces. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | jith1207: I see another chance of mating by placing Ra1 and trapping the black queen. If the Queen takes the rook, there is a beautiful discovered mating attack by white's knight, Queen and bishop. Though I agree the game line is the perfect economical one, am I missing something in the line I propose? |
|
Dec-22-15 | | morfishine: Its a clearance sale |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <An Englishman> Good Morning. After <16.Ra1 Qxa1 17.Bh5+ Kh8 18.Bg8>: click for larger view21...Bf5 looks quite embarrassing. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | kubbybulin: Nothing I like more than seeing an f-pawn advance punished. 2/2 |
|
Dec-22-15 | | Robespierre: When I solve a CG puzzle in less than 30-40 secs it's probably a Monday. However, being merely an advanced novice I thought that the black pawn -- rather than the queen -- would capture the bishop. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | raju17: The attack is to the point and starts immediately after black castles!!! |
|
Dec-22-15 | | raju17: 14...h6?? it should be 14...Nd7 15... Nf6 or Bf5 to create some shelter. |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <raju17> The problem with <15...Nd7>: click for larger viewIs that 16.Bd5+ still works just as well. At least 15...h6 saved the h-pawn. Black is simply in big trouble. Maybe best is 15...Re8, giving a little room to his king. But it's a pretty sorry best. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | lost in space: I was too stupid for this puzzle |
|
Dec-22-15 | | jith1207: Would not the line for 16.Ra1 be:
16..Qxa1 17. Qc4+ Kh8 18. Nf7+ Kg8 19. Nxd6+ Kh8 20. Nf7+ Kg8 21. Nxh6+ Kh8 22. Nf7+ Kg8 23. Ne5+ Kh8 24. Ng6+ Kh7 25. Nxf8+ Kh8 26. Ng6+ Kh7 27. Ne7+ Kh8 28.Qg8#? Is there any good defence to avoid mate? |
|
Dec-22-15 | | Oxspawn: If the bishop was a queen white could mate on h7. So can the bishop please step out of her way? 16. Bd5+ Qxd5 (or cxd5)
17. Qh7#
Or
16. Bd5+ Rf7
17. Bxa2 and mayhem followed by mate |
|
Dec-22-15 | | CliftonJ: I thought of
16. Bh7+ Kh8
17. Bg8
Only 17. ... g6 prevents immediate mate, but after 18. Qxg6, it's over. |
|
Dec-22-15 | | gofer: I looked at Bh7+ for far too long as I realised that Bf5 put a spanner in the works, but after managing to finally disregard that, the rest was easy! For those with time to kill and in the festive mood. If found this Christmas Tree game a couple of years ago at NoradSanta, but they don't have it there anymore... But I found it somewhere else... ...be warned, its a little addictive... http://www.primarygames.com/holiday... |
|
Dec-22-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <CliftonJ> 16.Bh7+ Kh8 17.Bg8 Qxg8! <jith1207> You may be on to something here. Of course, after <16.Ra1 Qxa1> [forced; the queen is trapped] <17.Qc4+ Kh8 18.Nf7+> click for larger view18...Kg8 walks into the standard smothered mate, as the White' ♗e4 covers h7. So Black would have to go in for <18...Rxf7 19.Qxf7>. Black is actually a piece ahead, but I don't know if he can defend against White's threats. But I've already talked too much tonight, so let somebody else figure it out. |
