HeMateMe: Howdy Nic. By chance, have you played any chess with intrepid NZ correspondent <Richard Taylor>? When Dickie T isn't theorizing on how morally corrupt the United States is, he apparently plays some serious chess, as he competed in the most recent NZ championships.

Richard Taylor: Welcome Nic if you are 'here' so to speak...congratulations on getting an IM Norm recently.

<HeMateMe> He hasn't played me. Nic Croad is from the South Island I think and is usually playing in a "higher" level.

But I have beaten some of his mates or "colleagues"...FMs Steadman, Bruce Watson, Steven Lukey and IM Paul Garbett. I lost my last game to Garbett but the previous was a draw (this year). In the 80s I got two draws with IM Sarapu. But mostly he beat me fairly easily.

Of course I have also lost a huge lot of games against weaker players than them...

But I will say this of the FMs in NZ I think that Nic Croad is a very strong player. I saw his results in England recently where he got an IM norm. Very impressive results and he plays some great games.

Feb-20-12  Nic the NZer: I have not played Richard Taylor yet, we have not played in the same sections very frequently. When I was in NZ I was living in Wellington, though I did play chess in the South Island quite a lot.

I think that a NZ representative team made up of the players Richard has mentioned would be fairly strong. I have scored all three results against all of them, and none of these guys is in any way a push over.

Richard Taylor: I would probably go terribly wrong either early or later on or I might have some luck!

But I am still playing only if and when there are tournies near me. I don't expect to beat players so much higher rated but try to do well against them.

For example, Lukey had had some bad results, and friend of mine egged me on to play a Benoni and for ages in the game I thought I was just lost but tried to find a counter. Eventually I concluded the game with a small combo involving a Q sac! I was new (again) to the A Grade, and Lukey couldn't believe his misfortune and got Steadman to look at the position before he resigned!

I think the mate idea was the only well thought out idea I had in the whole game, especially as I was making my opening up as I went, as I mostly used to do...So one sometimes has luck. I recall being very tired at the end of the game and I think Lukey was also. He lost I think for psychological reasons. Looking at the Benoni as White can make one nervous although played right by White it is really not that good...But at the right time it can be! If my friend hadn't urged me on the idea of beating such a strong player would have seemed ridiculous...
