Dec-22-14 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: This looks familiar.
Sac at g8, check at d8, and power through the useless interpositions. |
Dec-22-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Strange back-rank mate. You have to draw the king into the open! |
Dec-22-14 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Why didn't Black try ... Re2/Qxb2 a lot earlier? It looked pretty obvious for many moves. |
Dec-22-14 | | Steve.Patzer: So the question remains, which rook do you prefer to give mate? |
Dec-22-14
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: 33...Re2 looks like a ?? move, but even after something like 33...Ree8, White seems to have enough compensation for the sacrifice. |
Dec-22-14 | | M.Hassan: White is two pawns behind but has an outstanding opportunity for a Queen sac and mate in two: 34.Qxg8+ Kxg8(forced)
35.Rd8+ Nf8
36.R(any)xf8# |
Dec-22-14 | | psionl0: 5 seconds - a Monday record!
I wonder if I would have solved the problem so quickly if I didn't know it was a Monday puzzle? |
Dec-22-14 | | agb2002: White has a bishop for a knight and two pawns.
White can deliver mate in four by eliminating the only defender of Black's back rank: 34.Qxg8+ Kxg8 35.Rd8+ Re8 36.Rxe8+ Nf8 37.Rd(f)xf8#. |
Dec-22-14 | | lost in space: I love Mondays!
34. Qxg8+ Kxg8 (only move) 35. Rd8+ Re8 (or 35...Nf8 36. Rd8/f1-f8#) 36. Rxe8+ Nf8 36. Rd8/f1-f8# |
Dec-22-14
 | | Phony Benoni: <Steve.Patzer: So the question remains, which rook do you prefer to give mate?> The rook on the 8th rank, of course. When you're as Deft Challenged as I am, you move the piece that travels the shortest path. Fewer chances of accidentally dropping a rook. |
Dec-22-14 | | PhilFeeley: Monday, queen sac day:
1. Qxg8+ Kxg8
2. Rd8+ Nf8
3. R(either)xf8 # |
Dec-22-14 | | Once: If white is feeling particularly sadistic she can also flick in a cruel Bd5+ 35...Nf8 36. Bd5+ Kg8 37. R(any)xf8#
Totally not needed and makes the mate one move longer. To borrow a delightful phrase from American football, it's a case of unnecessary roughness. One interesting feature of this game what happens just before the mate. This is the position after 32...Rg8 click for larger viewThe POTD tactic is hidden. Black has protected her king and back rank with Rg8. White can hit the black back rank with any one of her major pieces, but she is only attacking one square at a time. The rook ought to be able to defend attacks on single squares. Then white plays 33. Rd7
click for larger viewThis seems to be a rook move attacking black's second rank. What is less obvious to spot - especially at blitz speeds is that it also opens up the white queen's line of attack to g8. White can still defend by moving the Rg8 or playing Ree8 or Qd5. But I presume she missed the threat. It can be harder to spot an exposed threat than a direct one. |
Dec-22-14 | | Oxspawn: Three, four or five checks depending at what point black gives up. 34 Qxg8+ Kxg8
35 Bd5+ Kh8
36 Rd8+ Re8
37 Rxe8+ Nf8
38 Rxf8++
Final two pairs of moves in either order; either rook at end. |
Dec-22-14 | | morfishine: 34.Qxg8+ forces mate: 34...Kxg8 35.Rd8+ |
Dec-22-14 | | zb2cr: White needs to strike quickly, in view of the threats along his second rank. A quick strike is available in the form of: 34. Qxg8+, Kxg8; 35. Rd8+, Re8; 36. Rxe8+, Nf8; 37. R(either)xf8#. |
Dec-22-14
 | | gawain: I was having unexpected trouble with this one--until I noticed the white rook on f1. |
Dec-22-14
 | | Penguincw: Yay Mondays! Queen sacrifice, rook check, and then take any pieces that block. I actually didn't solve the whole puzzle ( :( ) but I would've gotten it OTB. |
Dec-22-14
 | | Sally Simpson: Monday. Wake up, shower and shave, Cornfalkes and coffee open up Chessgames and sac a Queen. If White had played 32.Qh5 instead of 32.Qc4.
click for larger view(easily bust by 32...Qxa2) but the threat is another Queen sac mating in four. 33.Qxh7 Kxh7 34.Rh5+ Kg8 35.Bd5+ etc.
Once is correct. It's hard to come up with something fresh after all the good previous comments. |
Dec-22-14 | | varishnakov: 34.QxR+ KxR 35.R-Q8+ R-K1 36.RxR+ N-B1 37.RxN mate
queen sac, back rank weakness |
Dec-22-14 | | kevin86: White kicks off a quick back rank mate by Qxg8+ followed by Rd8+ etc. |
Dec-22-14 | | ThunderFire234: Wow, this was pretty easy even for a Monday puzzle! But that might be because the first thing that comes to mind on a Monday is a Queen sac. |
Dec-22-14 | | BOSTER: <Steve.Patzer: So the question remains, which rook do you prefer to give mate?>.
<PB: you move the piece that travels the shortest path>. But if you know the "Button theory of Chepukaitis", play move as close to the clock's button as possible.
It gains seconds. So, the rook d8. |
Dec-22-14 | | Steve.Patzer: <BOSTER> Good ansuh. Only problem is I am left handed. |
Dec-22-14
 | | perfidious: <Steve> In my playing days, I never let that deter me. |
Dec-22-14 | | TheaN: Monday 23 December 2014 <34.?> Monday. Queen. Sac. Win. <34.Qxg8+ Kxg8 35.Rd8+ Re8 36.Rxe8+ Nf8 36.Rxf8#> lets wrap this up and move on. |
