offramp: IT JUST wasn't Erik's day.
Jul-27-15  Mating Net: A smothered mate without the need for a discovery.
Jul-27-15  dfcx: Monday and the first move is not a sac. Smothered mate in three, 12...Qxf2+ 13.Kh1 Qg1+ 14.R/Nxg1 Nf2#
Jul-27-15  jhoro: This took me a good 5 min knowing it was a puzzle. Not easy for me at all.
Jul-27-15  jith1207: I love smothering.
Twice on Mondays if given a position as a puzzle.
I love smothering.
Tis' like putting on your opposition a muzzle.
Jul-27-15  lost in space: I love Mondays!

12...Qf2+ 13. Kh1 Qg1+ 14. N/Rxg1 Nf2#

Jul-27-15  Steve.Patzer: Took me a minute to get it.
Jul-27-15  patzer2: White's first (and likely decisive) mistake was 10. cxd4?

Instead, 10. h3! (+0.46 @ 21 depth, Deep Fritz 14) as in Navara vs M Keller, 2000 would have refuted 8...Ng5? and left White with a clear advantage.

White's second error was 12. Nf3?

Instead, 12. Be3 Qxh2+ 13. Kf1 Qh1+ 14. Ke2 Qxg2 15. Qc1 Nxf2 16. Rg1 Nd3+ 17. Rxg2 Nxc1+ 18. Bxc1 Bxd4 19. Nc3 (-0.70 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 14) would have maximized resistance.

Jul-27-15  M.Hassan: Black is a Knight down for a pawn but White has to pay the price of underdevelopment:

12..........Qxf2+
13.Kh1 Qg1+
14.(N/R)xg1 Nf2#

What is it called?, Anastasia or smothered mate?

An Englishman: Good Evening: 8...Ng4 and 9....exd4 set a trap that White can avoid with either 10.h3 or the curious 10.Bxf7+ (S Osbourne vs K O'Flaherty, 2005). Fond memories of the Archangelsk; nearly adopted it as my primary defense to 1.e4.
Jul-27-15  diagonalley: excellent puzzle for the novice
Jul-27-15  LucB: When it's Black's turn to play, I have to flip the board otherwise I simply don't see anything.

Am I the only one that does this?

Jul-27-15  agb2002: Black has a pawn for a knight.

White threatens 13.Nxh4.

Black wins with 12... Qxf2+ 13.Kh1 Qg1+ 14.N(R)xg1 Nf2#.

Jul-27-15  jith1207: <LucB> that's a good problem to have. I always feel good to look from White's Perspective. Imagine how I would play when I have Black's pieces!!
Jul-27-15  jith1207: <offramp> Going by the single game in the database, Erik clearly didn't have a very good day on the only day he got.
Jul-27-15  Cybe: 10. h3 and White should win; strong russian engines give +1 for White: 10... N:f2, 11. K:f2, 11... dc, 12. Kf1, 12... cb, 13. B:b2 - White has a piece for 4 pawns, but their attack is quite strong, however for the human the position is not so clear.

scormus: I was sure this was POTD a few years ago, but no post before today. I suppose a similar positions occur from time to time .....
Jul-27-15  Once: White dies with all his queenside pieces still undeveloped. There ought to be a chess term for that.
Jul-27-15  Squire49: Quite difficult for a Monday:-)
Jul-27-15  starry2013: This was tough.

I got a smothered eventually when I worked it out against a computer.

Qxf2+ 2.Kh1 Qg1+ 3.Nxg1 Nf2#

I did work out eventually the queen is en pris and you have to do something with it pretty quick. And I realise Mondays are normally a queen sacrifice, but I was looking more at h2. F2 seemed a nice square for the bishop to land on, but that probably goes nowhere.

The white knight was annoying me no end. I wanted to get rid of it, but seeing that happen on on g1 is a bit of a leap for my mind to make. This ends up being a queen and knight combination of moves, so the pieces need some movement before the mate is achieved, more so than on most Mondays I think.

Jul-27-15  Nick46: Jeepers, it took me half an hour to find the Blanket.
Jul-27-15  nisharaj31: This puzzle is more suited to a Tuesday
Jul-27-15  Sniffles: 9. H3
Jul-27-15  morfishine: Cool Game <patzer2> Navara vs M Keller, 2000 showing the correct treatment of the position with <10.h3>; even as late as move 12 White improves with <12.Be3> which is also what I thought

For those who took more time than normal for a Monday, try viewing the position from the Black side
