FSR: This is the second game in which I mated by castling! The first was F Rhine vs NN, 2014. Komodo 12 confirms that my bishop sac on move 7 was winning by force. 11.Bf4! was best and even mates in four moves according to Komodo. I saw it, but somehow it seemed unsporting not to sacrifice more material. But after my 11.Nb5+?!, 11...Kc5! would have complicated my task. After 11...Kxe5? I missed 12.Qf5#! In the moves thereafter I was desperately trying to find a way to castle with mate. I was finally able to do so after 13...Kd3. After 13...Kd4, 14.O-O-O wouldn't have been mate, and I would probably just have settled for 14.Qd5#.

Since this game, I have actually played a THIRD game in which I was able to castle with mate - although in that game my opponent deliberately played absurd moves. https://www.denverchess.com/games/v...

AFAIK, I am the only person to have done either of the following (a) checkmated by castling thrice and (b) checkmated by capturing en passant twice. For the latter two games, see Game Collection: En passant mates.

Jun-01-22  YoungEd: One pretty thing about the mating move is that it's crucial for the white K to cover the c2 square! Worth the missed 11. Bf4 for such a splendid finale. Nice work, <FSR>!

FSR: My fourth checkmate by castling: Robert S Robinson vs F Rhine, 2019. Could be a world record, except that IM Eric Rosen is very fond of mating by castling, and goes to extraordinary lengths to achieve that. As such (and the fact that he plays maybe 1000 times as many games as I do), it seems very likely that he holds the record.

fredthebear: It seems that checkmate by castling is always long, to the queenside. Has anybody seen one when castling short?

As far as I recall, there was Anand-Svidler which ended 0-0 +#

FSR: <moronovich> Close but no cigar. Anand vs Svidler, 1999 gets an honorable mention in my game collection Game Collection: Mate by Castling.

beatgiant: 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all on the board, not a creature was stirring save the Black pieces' king and lord.

<FSR> was calculating attacking lines with care, in hopes a neat checkmate soon would be there. When what should his wondering eyes then see, but a miniature by castling with mate on d3. "On king's knight, on queen, on queen's knight, on bishop! To the center we go to beat this fish up!"

He laughed when he saw it, in spite of himself, making him look a right jolly old elf. He was heard to exclaim, ere he logged off the site, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good knight."

FSR: <beatgiant> Thanks for the poetic accompaniment. As noted before, I missed 12.Qf5#, but can't complain since my blindness resulted in mate by castling.

beatgiant: <FSR> Yes, we might even say: As the king from the onslaught of white pieces fled, visions of castling with mate danced in <FSR>'s head.

I made one before in Tokelo Klaas vs J Santos da Costa, 2016 but I thought that particular game wasn't good enough to submit for GOTD (Black fell for a cheapo).

But my version is nothing compared to the Covid-themed one by User: johnlspouge which you can find here Search Kibitzing

There is this very well known example, by Morphy (against his own father). Even if it is an odds game, I guess it qualifies to illustrate the possibility:

Morphy vs A Morphy, 1850

Teyss: Well done <FSR>! As well as <beatgiant> for the extra content.

For memo 6...Na5 is the only move in the Db. 6...d6 seems to hold a bit for Black but his position isn't good despite the extra Pawn. Opening Explorer

Merry Christmas to all in case I cannot log in tomorrow!

From my game collection Game Collection: Mate by Castling :

Morphy vs A Morphy, 1850

G Spencer vs NN, 1893

NN vs C Meyer, 1931

O Seuss vs H Hurme, 1969

Steinbach vs Chess Champion Super System III, 1982

NN vs Eric, 2017

J Mason vs Dr. S, 1882

Dec-25-24  VerySeriousExpert: Merry Christmas, dear chess players of this website!
Dec-25-24  VerySeriousExpert: @FSR
I have had a time to look at the 1st of these games, thank you! It is interesting that the mate by castling could be done in this game ( Morphy vs A Morphy, 1850 ) that moment, because it was an odds game without the Rook on a1: if it would be a normal chess game, than the move ...Kc2xc1 couldn't be possible, d2-d3 would be a mate.
Dec-26-24  Olavi: Seuss-Hurme may thus still be the only verifiable tournament game...
