An Englishman: Good Morning: Aside from a pair of disappointing early draws, we have rather an intriguing slate of games today, even though Giri-Yu looks like it will soon end in a draw. No idea why Carlsen chose to sacrifice that pawn. Seemed wholly unnecessary.
Jan-24-20  Count Wedgemore: <keypusher: <beenthere240> It's equal if sesse is to be believed>

Well, that's a relief. For me, White is just better, and with better endgame prospects if things were to proceed that far.

Jan-24-20  pdvossen: It is even if the computer is to be believed. I do like how Magnus has his rooks on the back rank. Yet, Duda has those Knights in an agressive fashion.

Diademas: <wordfunph: i chop my precious down under if King Magnus does not win this game. result: 0-1>

Would that imply chopping half of the "package" in case of a draw?

Asking for a friend...

Jan-24-20  Pedro Fernandez: Carlsen wants to win but Duda's position is solid. Anyway, I think Magnus will have a better chance to win in the next two games. Meanwhile, Kovalev's position is already Pyrrhic, hard to save his game.
Jan-24-20  Ulhumbrus: Duda has the bishop pair and the outside passed h pawn. It remains to be seen whether he can make them count.

Diademas: To me it now looks like there are two possible outcomes. A black win is not one of them.
I have no idea why Carlsen played g6.
Jan-24-20  Count Wedgemore: I agree with <Diademas>.
Jan-24-20  wordfunph: 37.Bg5 played..

go Norway! fight Magnus!

Jan-24-20  AdolfoAugusto: To make this interesting for the spectators? I agree, bishop pair, free pawn... but the chamo want to win, maybe he can will it to happen?
Jan-24-20  Pulo y Gata: a draw or loss for Magnus here is not bad at all because it will inspire him to win his last two games
Jan-24-20  vonKrolock: 37...♘e5 threatening ♘d3: A very peculiar position, Black is on the attack, and he is who can reach a winning position
Jan-24-20  Jambow: Vintage Magnus going for the long tortuous grind... Will he win like he had so often before. Looks likely... King has left his throne with dagger in hand!!!
Jan-24-20  Count Wedgemore: With the bishop pair in such an open endgame position with pawns on both sides, it is hard to see how White can ever lose this unless he falls into a tactical trap of some kind.
Jan-24-20  Jambow: Yes you are correct Magnus will probably have to take half a point and be satisfied. Amazing how often his endgames involve knights or so it seems. Maybe Kasparov's influence?

chancho: Carlsen is competing, but if Caruana keeps on winning game after game, then it's all foregone conclusion. TATA Steel is his for the taking.

MissScarlett: Winning superGM tournaments is old hat - all that matters in the chess world at present is Magnus's unbeaten streak. The Candidates is the only event that can usurp it - and that mainly because Magnus won't be competing.

Annie K.: So sorry folks, we had a bad technical problem that took a while to find and fix. :( This shouldn't happen again.

Thanks everybody for keeping the commentary on point despite the glitch, and especially thanks to <CIO> and <keypusher> for providing relay diagrams. :)

MissScarlett: Does anyone come here for the live games? I'll shortly be submitting a drawn simul game from 1893.
Jan-24-20  WorstPlayerEver: It would be great to do an old live game. But some people always spoil the fun if they already have seen the movie.
Jan-24-20  vonKrolock: With 39.♖e1!, and the exchange of Rooks, sacrificing simultaneously the Pawn b2, Duda saved half a point.
