That looks like a very bad move. White's attack on the k-side will now be even quicker.

  OhioChessFan: g,6 looks needlessly weakening.

OhioChessFan: 12. 0-0-0 putting the Rook on the same file as the Queen looks right.

perfidious: Hmmmm....Black's position is beginning to take on a ghastly hue. Sometime after securing his king position, he may manage to disentangle his queenside.

OhioChessFan: Giri has frittered away the huge attack he had.

OhioChessFan: Exchanging Knights on e5 allowing the Bishop a free tempo onto the long diagonal was a really bad strategic idea.
Jan-28-24  BxChess: <OHF:> I don't think Giri had much choice as his knight was undefended. Giri still has options on the h-file.
Jan-28-24  Atking: Brillant but I don't get it 20...fxB 21.Qxg6 Qc6 22.Rd6 Qe4

OhioChessFan: <Bx> 13. Be2 develops the Bishop, defends the Knight, and connects the Rooks-afterb0-0-0.
Jan-28-24  BxChess: <OCF> Yes I see that might have worked.

Black took the wrong moment to develop that recalcitrant QB, Bc8-e6. Black should have played 26...Re5 first, then he could have brought out the QB a move later.

Jan-28-24  BxChess: There are few things worse than a recalitrant bishop.

OhioChessFan: Qh2 or Rh1 will end this.
Jan-28-24  BxChess: We've reached move 30 and tactics look like they will end this.

  OhioChessFan: Thanks for the game.
Jan-28-24  BxChess: Congrats to Giri. I don't know whether he was too cautious in his initial kingside attack or if Max defended well. But in the end he saw it through. Interesting how his bishop was stuck in the corner for most of the game.
Jan-28-24  Atking: What a surprise! Almost 30 moves with a little trick to end the game. I still think Black could have easily equalize after the sacrifice with 21...Qc6.

perfidious: The concluding idea brought Mecking vs L A Tan, 1973 to mind:

If Black had played the simple 24....Bxd3 25.Bxd3 Rxd3 he would have drawn comfortably, but he went in for another idea and fell into a neat pitfall.
