1. e4 e5
2. f4 exf4
3. Nf3 g5
4. Bc4 d6
5. d4 g4
6. O-O gxf3
7. Qxf3 up to here there are quite a few game in the database..

7...b5!? the novelty; same idea as above.

8. Bxb5+ c6
9. Ba4 Ba6
10. Re1 Qh4
11. Rd1 (missing 11 Bc2)

11...Bh6
12. e5 d5

14. Qf3 O-O
15. Nc3 Rd8
16. Bb3 Rxd4
17. Be3 Rxd1+
18. Rxd1 Ng6

black maybe has a slight advantage according to crap pc but who knows?

Apr-21-05  drukenknight: How not to play the Kingsgambit. I made a bunch of errors might still have chances up to move 15.

Three pawns defense (4...d6)

1. e4 e5
2. f4 exf4
3. Nf3 g5
4. Bc4 d6
5. d4 g4
6. Ng1 (apparently 00 is far stronger)

6... Qh4+
7. Kf1 g3? (f3! is much better)
8. Nf3 Qh5
9. Nc3 Bh6
10. Nd5 b5?
11. Bxb5+ c6
12. Nc7+ Kd8
13. Bxc6 Nxc6
14. Nxa8 Bb7
15. Kg1 Bxa8 (gxh7!? maybe better)
16. hxg3 Qg6
17. d5 Ne5
18. gxf4 and 1-0, just bad.

Jul-07-05  ryan hardy: how good do you thbink you are then
Jul-07-05  KingV93: I love to play the kings gambit but get squashed regularly with it, anyone recommend a good book that is actually available ? I have looked for the Joe Gallagher book "winning with the kings gambit", which is frequently recommended, without success. thanks in advance.
Jul-07-05  refutor: i like santasiere's "the romantic king's gambit" you should be able to pick that up
Jul-07-05  Makofan: Like IM Day, I played KGA and Ruy Exchange almost exclusively in tournaments (except I am about 1800, not 2300!)

I use the book "King's Gambit" by Spassky & Zaitsev (I think that is the other author) I have a definite plus record with the opening, including wins over quite a few 1900 players.

In my thoughts, it is actually a positional opening where White gets better development and a strong centre plus initiative in exchange for a measly pawn.

Jul-07-05  sneaky pete: Hey man, that's "The, like, totally Romantic King's Gambit in Games and Analyses" by Tony Santasiere, Chess Digest, 1992 (ISBN 0-87568-215-4). Ignore the ridiculous "Current Analysis Revisions" by Ken Smith. Also, like, ignore the spelling of the author's name as <A.E.Santasier> on the cover. Most of all, ignore the, like, totally abominable cover design with a, like, 7 by 6 squares chessboard by Elaine Smith. The contents, Santasiere's manuscript, is okay, man. Totally!
Jul-18-05  who: I was playing the black side of the Fischer bust 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6 4.Bc4 h6 and my opponent went h4. It stops g5, and it makes it very difficult to hold the extra pawn. Any ideas? see N R McDonald vs Flear, 1993 for an example where white gets the better game with 5.h4
Jul-18-05  refutor: <any ideas?> don't hold the extra pawn ;) why not just develop? it's an improved kieseritsky (for black) because the pawn isn't doing too much (except keeping black from playing g5) but without the weakening ...g5 by Black
Jul-18-05  who: What's a kieseritsky?

  tpstar: <who> On 5. h4!? try 5 ... Nf6 6. Nc3/d3 Nh5 aiming for the hole at g3 = Kaltschmidt vs Baroin, 1989

See how the Nf3 has no good Discovery move, as 7. Ne5!? dxe5 8. Qxh5 Qe7 holds, or 7. Ng5?! hxg5 and the Rh8 covers the Nh5.

Jul-18-05  who: <tpstar> 7.Ne5 dxe5 8.Qxh5 Qe7 holds, but gives black no advantage. I would think black should be able to get more.
Oct-12-05  Averageguy: Does anyone know the 3...f5 variation? I played against it as white a few months ago, here is the game: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 f5 4.Bc4 (I decided to continue in muzio style, I had seen this variation in an odds game where white played without his QN, and he won quickly)4...fxe4 5.0-0 exf3 6.Qxf3 Bc5+ 7.d4 (throwing away another pawn for fast developement, I'm so far down in material it doesn't matter now, I must checkmate him or die!)7...Bxd4+ 8.Kh1 Ne7 9.Bxf4 Bxb2 (allowing a nice combination) 10.Bxc7 (a clearance sac) 10...Qxc7 11.Qf7+ Kd8 12.Qf8+ Rxf8 13.Rxf8# Comments on this game or variation would be appreciated.

tpstar: <gadfly> Thrilling game! Great job earning a draw against a strong master. 3 ... h6 and 3 ... d6 are very similar and usually transpose, but beware 3 ... h6 4. b3 Opening Explorer and White scores well. After 6. 0-0 I believe Black's best move is 6 ... Bg7, then 7. c3 Nc6 Opening Explorer which leaves the Bc8 at home to defend b7, and now 8. Qb3 should be met by 8 ... Qe7 P Goldberg vs W Loeffler, 1966 and Black eventually consolidates the Pawn plus. White played a nice combination to regain the Pawn (10. Bxf7+!), then 19. Nxd6+!? was speculative. I like 20 ... Qd7 and if 21. Re1+ Ne7, and now White can win the Pg5 but only after trading Queens. Also look at 28 ... Kf7 29. Qxf4+ Qf5 and White runs out of checks for the moment. Congratulations. =)
May-14-06  Scarf wearer: A question: when playing the black side of KGA: Fischer defence, is there anything wrong with 4...Nf6? There are twelve games in total and black seems to get hammered. (White wins eight, black three and one tie)

...Nf6 is answered by Nc3 (which makes sense), but an interesting line I've been fiddling around with is 5... d5!?, challenging the e-pawn and if white does nothing, winning it.

Unfortunately, a students budget isn't enough for a Fritz, or anything nearly as good. Can I ask some kind-hearted person to spare a little time trying out this line?

Thanks!

May-14-06  NakoSonorense: This is one of my favorite openings. However, after the lines, 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6 4.Bc4 Be6, I don't know what to do. I usually exchange Bishops, but I dont like the position after that.

Any suggestions as to what is the best move here?

Thanks in advance.

Jun-03-06  DeepBlade: <NakoSonorense> Exchanging would lead to 1.Bxe6 fxe6, stripping the black king, which is good in the KGA. 1.b3 Bxc4 2.bxc4 looks also nice to me, gaining a pawncenter.
Jun-19-06  KingG: Here is a games collection i made on the modern King's Gambit Accepted. I tried to use only the most theoretically sound variations(as far as i can tell), which may not be as impressive as double Muzios, but IMO are important to learn if one ever hopes to play the King's Gambit at any kind of reasonable level.

Game Collection: How to play the King's Gambit Accepted

I have also made a corresponding collection for the King's Gambit declined: Game Collection: How to play the King's Gambit Declined
