ANTHONY KOSTEN
(born Jul-24-1958, 67 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

In 1982 he placed third in the British Championship, held in Torquay. In 1989 he moved to France and since then has captained and coached that country in major competitions.

Kosten played many tournaments, finishing first or equal first in the following:

1984 Budapest
1985 Andorra International Open
1986 Geneva International Open, clear first at 8.5/9 1987 Cappelle-la-Grande Open (first on tie-break) 1987 Challengers Open, Hastings Congress 1987/88 1989 Challengers Open, Hastings Congress 1989/90 1991 San Benedetto del Tronto
1992 Mandelieu-la-Napoule
1993 14th Festival of Asti
1994 Chanac (repeated in 1995)
1995 Saint-Affrique
2000 Naujac-sur-Mer – L'Étang-Salé
2004 Montpellier – Villeurbanne
2005 Mundolsheim
2006 Cap d'Agde
2007 Clermont-Ferrand - Saint-Dié-des-Vosges
2008 Avoine, Indre-et-Loire - Kilkenny
2010 Wellington College International
Perhaps the most striking of these performances was at the 1st Geneva Open tournament of 1986 (170 players, including several grandmasters, among them Anthony Miles, Miguel Quinteros, and Soviet (Armenian) Smbat Lputian). The event was nine rounds and Kosten won his first eight games. This was sufficient to already guarantee him first place ahead of a strong field. In the final game, he accepted a draw offer from his compatriot Glenn Flear. He agreed after some half an hour's deliberation, for the position was hopelessly lost for Flear. That acceptance prevented Kosten from achieving a perfect 9/9 score. IM Kosten won outright a full point ahead of second placed GM Lars Karlsson.

He lives in Clermont-Ferrand, France, and is now naturalized French and registered on the French Elo list.

Kosten was married to the daughter of Hungarian Grandmaster Győző Forintos.

Team Championships
With the English national team he participated in the European Championship in 1989 in Haifa, where he received the individual bronze medal for his score of 5 points from 7 games on the first reserve board. In 1990 he played for England in the 1st VISA Chess Summit in Rekyavik. England came second.

In the British Team Championships 4NCL, he won with Slough in 1996, 1999 and 2000 and with Guildford in 2004, 2007 and 2008. He twice won the French Team Championships with Monaco, in 2001 and 2002. In Germany he has played on the first board of Schott Mainz since 1994. In Austria, he played for Frohnleiten from 2001, which became Holz Dohr-Semriach from the 2004/05 season. In the 2007/08 season he was the best player with Rainer Buhmann. In Switzerland, he played for Lausanne Le Joueur, and he was also active in the Hungarian (for MTK) and Basque (for Oaso X.T.) Team Championships.

Mar-12-04  Benjamin Lau: Is this the same person as GM Tony Kosten? He (Tony Kosten) has a really cool site I just discovered, wish I saw it earlier. (Chesspublishing.com)
Mar-19-04  Benjamin Lau: Hmmmm, but GM Tony Kosten plays the English and other assorted flank moves as white, no such opening here so I guess this isn't him. But I can't find any other Kostens in this database, I guess Tony isn't in here.
Mar-20-04  sleepkid: It might be Tony Kosten, but with only 156 games in the database, you probably aren't seeing a wide selection of his openings.
Mar-20-04  ughaibu: Looking at the dates and opponents of the early games it seems certain to be the same Tony Kosten (how common a name is it?).
Mar-20-04  Benjamin Lau: I guess you guys are right, but he plays the English very consistently in tournaments, yet there is not a single English game in this db attributed to him as white! He wrote a famous book on that opening "The Dynamic English" which most people use as the main guide.
Mar-21-04  Dudley: Concerning Tony Kosten's games- there are at least 5 games in his collection where he is playing the English as white: see games 133,137, 139,143,and 149.
Mar-21-04  Benjamin Lau: Dudley, you're quite right, I don't know how I missed them earlier, I thought I had tried using the chessgames.com search, I guess I must have inputted the wrong fields. Here are the rest http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... Still, that's not a whole lot of games out of 156.
May-04-04  Everett: I think Kosten started playing the English heavily, almost solely, over the past 5 years or so, allowing him to quickly become well-versed in the ins and outs of the opening.

I'd play the English but the Symmetrical variation drives me up a wall.

Jun-16-06  BIDMONFA: Anthony Cornelius Kosten

Aug-21-06  HolyKnight: I looked at Kosten's recent games. To me he is playing a Reti/English or e4 as white. He is not playing 1.c4, 2. g3 as white as his book recommends you to play. Simon Williams is still playing the Clasical Dutch now in 2006! I guess which author backs his bood best?
Aug-21-06  HolyKnight: book sorry not bood
Sep-11-06  Brown: <HolyKnight> If I had a bood, I'd back it too! The Classical Dutch. Does Webb play the Bird as white?
Jun-30-07  FICSwoodpusher: I see that this nice game is not yet in the database:

Jul-17-07  alter: Kosten's book "The Dynamic English" has to be one of the best repertoire books ever written. Also, his articles in Kingpin are highly recommended.
Sep-09-07  tammany: Mr. Kosten. I've owned your "Easy Guide to the Najdorf" for at least a year now. I love the Najdorf. If it didn't exist I honestly don't know if I would love chess as much or even at all. I will soon take up the mantle for the KID in my repertoire and I hope to say the same then. Happy Trails to you....
Sep-09-07  tammany: ... and How do you know when you're ready for the poison pawn?
Sep-09-07  tammany: And Gata Kamsky was on ICC earlier tonight chatting in 103 and then playing regular people 3 2 from his laptop. It felt special. Thank You Gata.
Jun-07-08  Zygalski: If you can get hold of a copy, Kosten's "Latvian Gambit Lives!" is the definitive guide to this ultra-sharp opening. 224 pages of incredibly detailed analysis covering all likely lines. I suggest going to amazon then using the "used & new" section. You should be able to get a new copy for under $10 US or around £5.
Jun-07-08  Nikita Smirnov: I like his book The Latvian Gmabit.

chessgames.com: We found some sources indicate that Tony's birthday is July 24th (not the 27th as shown above). For example, Polish Wikipedia (http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthon...) as well as our prolific kibitzer BIDMONFA.

Can anybody confirm the true birthday?

Jun-07-08  Karpova: <chessgames.com>
Jeremy Gaige gives his birthday as July 24th also.
Jun-09-08  Nikita Smirnov: <Can anybody confirm the true birthday?>

Yes,he himself.
But if I'm right there are some books where it is written 24th July.I don't remember which book.Bur I think it was written by a person who knows him well.

Jul-24-08  rjfsworstnightmare: Happy Birthday Tony! I like your book on the Philidor, how White can favorably open up the semiclosed position to advantage... Winning doesn't suck!! Thanks!!!
Jul-24-08  brankat: Happy Birthday Anthony!
