CHRISTOPHER YOO
(born Dec-19-2006, 18 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

International Master (2019). Grandmaster (2021).

On November 19, 2016, Christopher Yoo became the youngest USCF Master in history at the age of 9 years, 336 days. He received his FIDE Master title by scoring 7/9 at the 2017 North American Youth chess championship's U16 group. (1) He received his third and final Grandmaster Norm at the 2021 U.S. Masters. On December 12, 2021, he succeeded in raising his rating over 2500, thus qualifying for the Grandmaster title, a week before his 15th birthday.

He finished second at the American Continental Championship in El Salvador, thereby qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. He won the U.S. Junior Championship in 2022 and 2024, thereby qualifying for the U.S. Championship. Despite being the lowest-rated player in the Julius Baer Generation Cup (2022), he finished in the top half, thereby qualifying for the playoffs. He lost his playoff match against Arjun Erigaisi, who ultimately finished second to Carlsen in the tournament, 3.5-2.5.

Yoo was expelled from the United States Championship (2024) and suspended from USCF play for a year for punching a female videographer in the back after losing his fifth-round game C Yoo vs Caruana, 2024.

Jan-04-19  wordfunph: Yoodaman!
From 1990, to be more exact.

Congrats to the young Christopher, you got a long way to go and climb up to greater heights, in chess.

Jun-09-19  sonia91: <Youngest ever American International Master 12-year-old Christopher Yoo got the third prize at the 7th FIDE World Cup in Composing in section D – endgame studies. Like music composers, chess composers create beautiful studies, just using a board and pieces instead of notes.

It’s a fantastic achievement at such a young age as the competition was incredibly strong – many of the world’s best composers took part, including Oleg Pervakov, Steffen Slumstrup Nielsen and Yochanan Afek. The gold medal in this category went to Sergey Didukh from Ukraine.

Christopher Yoo: “What I like about chess is the geometry of it. I like the beauty of the game. I like tactics.”
