| Aug-28-04 | | WMD: "I started to play chess in my hometown of Odessa (Ukraine, former Soviet Union) in 1976 when I was 6 years old. The same year, another even more important chess event took place in Odessa, the international chess tournament won by Filipino IM Rosendo Balinas. Unfortunately, in 1976 I was still not interested in international chess events, and am hardly able now to relate anything about the 1976 Odessa International Tournament. However, in October 2000 I found «The Filipinos Play Chess» website (editor Bobby Ang), with absolutely exceptional coverage of this tournament based on the articles by Rosendo Balinas published in 1976. See links to the website and the tournament coverage in the right margin. "GM Rosendo C. Balinas, Jr. passed away at his residence in Antipolo City on Thursday, September 24, 1998. He was the six-time chess champion of the Philippines and a lawyer by profession. However, he could not have been regarded as a chess professional as he seemed to have been into his practice as a lawyer full time. Had he been born into a country that supported its chessplayers financially, GM Balinas would probably have excelled more. I believe he could not practice law and chess at the same time; and eventually had to abandon chess. |

As a true lawyer that Balinas was, he took on and publicly opposed Campomanes' abuse of power and repressive treatment of Filipino chess players who opposed him. Grandmaster Balinas did not abandon chess but was blacklisted by Campomanes, who instead bankrolled Torre's chess career full time. Balinas consequently left the Philippines and joined his parents in the U. S. where he played infrequently due to poor health. He passed away on September, 1998, from liver cancer. True to his conviction, Grandmaster Balinas, on national GMA TV coverage, condemned Campomanes and his cohort Casto Abundo for their self enriching abuse of their position, and for setting Philippine chess back. It is gratifying to see what the new Philippine chess leadership of Hon. Pichay have achieved with so many Filipino chess talents now achieving their Grandmaster title in such a short time. |

In the Meralco sponsored "Beat Bobby Fischer" of the top 10 Filipino masters, only GM Balinas [then a National Master, compared to Bobby's GM title] upheld the Filipino's tinik sa chess against Fischer, the Best Chess Player in the universe :) That is why Balinas is considered the best Asian player ever before Anand and Torre came along. |
