MICHAEL BASMAN
(born Mar-16-1946, died Oct-26-2022, 76 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

Michael John Basman was born in St Pancras, London, England. He was awarded the IM title in 1980 and having dual nationality won the Erevan Championship whilst living there in the early 1970s. He was also a pioneer in the production of audio tapes for chess.

Basman was noted for his use of unorthodox flank openings, such as 1.g4, 1.h3, 1.e4 g5, etc. He expanded on the work of Henri Grob with his book on the topic of 1.g4, The Killer Grob.

Basman created the UK Chess Challenge, a tournament for juniors of all standards and ages progressing over four stages.(1)

Apr-24-03  popski: Heh, I like his brave & strange oppenings! I found this comment on net: Ultimate weirdo, IM Michael Basman. They feature his new Global Opening, 1 h3 intending 2 a3!, and the same moves reversed as Black. The logic is that, in the opening, you are supposed to occupy the centre with pawns, because they are your weakest pieces; Basman merely extends the concept to putting NOTHING in the centre, because nothing is weaker than a pawn....
Oct-28-03  sleepkid: Many unusual openings, played with a fair degree of success, though not against the leading lights of his day. Even though the database only has games for him through 1994 he still plays as far as I know. Born in 1946, the highest published rating I've seen for him was 2360. He won the 44th Richmond Rapid Play in 2002 with a score of 5/6 tying with WGM Harriet Hunt.
Feb-10-04  shr0pshire: I try to emmulate Basman in my games. He is a very strong player, that went against theory, and showed that it can be played, and wrote a lot of his own theory.

Basman, played the risky grob, and the super risky borg (reversed grob) many times through the 80s and 90s against sometimes very strong opponents. This shows the strength of his play, and should make one go back and think about if his hypermodern theories are that bad after all. I employ them in my games with strong success against strong players as well.

There needs to be another strong player like Basman on the circuit now to stir things up with their theory. Sometimes I feel chess is bland due to the herd mentality, and how people follow what is trendy.

Basman provides the spice to chess with his unusual openings and his powerful combinations that I love about chess.

Mar-14-04  GoodKnight: I had the honour of shaking Mike Basman's hand when I came second in a chess tournament...
Mar-14-04  Airlock: Basman played a game against Andersson (I think) which was called the immortal waiting move game in which he kept repeating moves until his opponent self destructed. I dont see it on this data base. Perhaps I got the players mixed up.
Apr-18-04  Viking: I got lots of respect for players like Basman. He opens with the cursed 1 g4. and he's got a lot of success with it. I play 1. g4 in blitz games, and I think it is as good as any white opening. In games with longer time controls, I think it'z dubvious though.
Apr-25-04  Carroll: Why isn't Basman's win against Mecking a notable game here? Why isn't the game even on this site. It is in my Keene book called "Battles of Hastings". I think it is Basman's most famous game.
Apr-25-04  shr0pshire: <Caroll> Please submit the Mecking-Basman game. I would really like to see it!

If do not put a pawn in the center, then he should at least control it;;

Nov-04-04  WMD: Just learnt that Basman married a Bulgarian woman in 1971 and lived out there for a while. Michael, you old dark horse!

redlance: Is Michael still playing? I used to
have some of his cassettes.
He should put out DVDs now.
Jan-09-05  WMD: Those cassettes from the 1970s are an interesting part of English chess history and could be made available as audio files over the Internet. Ray Keene did a few, I know. Tony Miles, I think.

redlance: I have one Ray Keene did,
Also several by Basman.
Feb-20-05  WMD: Selected answers from the Kingpin questionnaire, Autumn 1993:

Q: Which living player do you most admire?

B: Me.

Q: What/who is your favourite band/music/composer?

B: Sandy Denny and the Fairport Convention.

Q: What is your most unappealing habit?

B: Urinating on my opponents during chess games.

Q: What is your favourite televison programme?

B: I don't watch television. Television is for people too lazy to find something to do.

Q: What was your most embarrassing moment at the chess board?

B: Sitting in front of the audience at my first Hastings Premier.

Q: Have you ever been the victim of cheating at a tournament?

B: Yes, but it was self-inflicted.

Q: Who is the most irritating opponent you have ever faced?

B: Florin Gheorghiu at the Varna tournament in 1971. Every time he made a good move he would slam his pop bottle down on the table.

Q: Are there any other sports/activities at which you excel?

B: No.

Benzol: I wonder how many people remember that Sandy Denny sang on Led Zepplin's "Battle Of Evermore"? It's a pity she passed away so young.
Feb-20-05  schnarre: Basman: a founding father for the less than orthodox, or not at all orthodox.
Feb-20-05  Abaduba: I think of Basman as the result of someone taking Tony Miles to the next level. Miles cracks wise, Basman cracks wiser. Miles opens weird, Basman opens weirder. The major difference is that Basman is not as strong as Miles - and he's still alive.
Feb-21-05  schnarre: <Abaduba>Alas poor Miles!

ray keene: it is my opnion that basman was a tremendously strong strategic player with a very fine feel for the attack and initiative, but not a good calculator and he believed -possibly wrongly-that he had a poor memory. i think he handicapped himself by playing his weird openings and was in fact more dangerous when using orthodox systems. amongst his best games are ones v

mecking
botvinnik
savon
hartston

and he also scored wins v speelman nunn and miles

Feb-21-05  schnarre: <ray keene> Could it be said that "handicapping" by playing unorthodox openings is a form of odds-giving?!
