 | | Richard Taylor: I saw a book of strange openings written or co-written by Schiller. I also have an old book about defense which has some good games in it and is well written although there are some printing typo errors but it is still good on defence and counter attack etc. I was also wondering about his health when I saw the 'April Fools Mate' GOTD just now in the Pakham's Attack I think it is... Maybe specializing in "weird" might help in weekenders and blitz for players who don't like learning main lines (and are ordinary lowish rated club players like myself, when I play which is rare these days...) Some of those strange openings can be unsettling to face. |

Sep-01-18 | | Octavia: Hello all, I looked at the link on fb but there is only one pic nothing else. I've been playing the CaroKann for years but only now am I studying Complete Defense for KingPawn Openings! It's an ebook. I hope I'm learning something from it. It's got very many detailed instructions. I hope Eric is ok. I once watched an event in London where he was the arbiter. He looked quite different from this pic. He won against Nakamura a long time ago. Why didn't he get to be a GM? presumably he didn't get invited to top competitions at the time when it mattered. |
|
Sep-01-18 | | Gudrun: yes, his fb is still there. He's got over 1000 friends (so he doesn't need me!) and posted himself last in Oct 2017 |
|
Sep-24-18 | | Gallicrow: "Why didn't he get to be a GM? presumably he didn't get invited to top competitions at the time when it mattered." Or maybe there's a different reason, one that Mr Schiller shares with me... |

Sep-24-18 | | Gejewe: <Octavia> <Gallicrow>
I have met Mr. Schiller repeatedly in the 1990's when he played in the Groningen tournament (the Netherlands) and in the US Masters & US Open that he organised in Hawaii in 1998. The next decade I have met him again when at the Gibraltar masters. That must have been around the same time that he was an arbiter at the Staunton memorial in London. This picture surely is an old one, that is how he looked in the 1990ties.
Unfortunately our chessfriend has been suffering from bad illness over a longer period.
The reason for not becoming a grandmaster ? Because only a small group of people that combine a lot of talent with complete focus will make that title in the end. Eric was and probably is addicted to chess, but has so many other interests. University studies and politics just to name a few. I presume that is what Gallicrow means. We fall short of GM status in chess, lacking talent or focus, or most of the time both ;-) |

 | | FSR: I have sad news to report. Eric Schiller reportedly had a massive stroke this past Monday and died yesterday. |
|
Nov-05-18 | | zanzibar: Sad news, I wasn't aware of all his health problems (primarily complications from diabetes) until I read his wiki page. (<CG> should wait for an 'official' source before updating his bio, however. "...reportedly..." isn't enough (imo). Wiki isn't even updated. Sorry I have to mention such a matter at such a time.) |

 | | HeMateMe: my condolences to his family and loved ones. Always difficult to lose someone in the chess family. I first became aware of Mr. Schiller when I browsed the chess section of book stores and saw his books. |

<SugarDom: Sorry I scolded you for dumping Shirov in favor of Kramnik vs Kasparov.> And wasn't even his fault on that episode. Garry simply could find sponsor for that match. |

 | | Penguincw: Just heard of his passing. RIP to you.
One of my favourite game collections is based on checkmate patterns he gave in a book, which I turned into a collection. Game Collection: Checkmate: Checkmate Patterns |

 | | wwall: I wrote a bio on Eric on my chess page at
http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/a...Bill Wall |
|
Nov-06-18 | | zanzibar: <Bill W> this is a gem! <In 1985, both Schiller and I were visited by the FBI because we subscribed to Russian newsletters and Russian magazines such as 64 and Shakhmaty Bulletin. Schiller said that all his packages and envelopes were opened twice, once by the Soviets and once by the Americans (FBI and CIA). He had a few postal games going against some Russian players. The FBI asked both of us for a listing of ranked Soviet players or contacts we had with Soviet chess players. <I was discrete, but Schiller wrote to FIDE and asked them to mail a list of all ranked chess players to the FBI.> <<>>> |
|
Nov-06-18 | | zanzibar: This is pretty rich too...
<n 1995, he was a chess advisor for the music group Phish. > |

 | | perfidious: <zed>, dang, FBI never contacted me back in the eighties--thought sure they would have! |
