Cori is the younger brother of Deysi Estela Cori Tello. He won his third GM norm and his GM title in September 2009 at the age of 14 years 2 months.
Championships
<Youth and Junior> He placed equal third behind Illya Nyzhnyk and Daniel Naroditsky in the World U12 Championship in 2007 in Antalya, Turkey. He also scored 7.5/13 at the World Junior Championship (2010). He won the 2011 World U16 championship held in Brazil. In August 2012, he scored 8/13 in the World Junior Championship (2012) and in November 2012, he scored 8/11 in the World U18 Championship held in Maribor in Slovenia to place =3rd, a point behind the winner Dariusz Swiercz and a half point behind the runner up, Hovhannes Gabuzyan. In September 2013, he missed out on the bronze medal at the World Junior Championship (2013) on tiebreak, having scored 9.5/13. He was =2nd (4th on tiebreak) at the World U18 Championship 2013.
<Continental and World> In November 2010, he came fourth at the Panamerican Continental Championships. In April 2011, he came =3rd at the American Continental Championship held in Estado de Toluca in Mexico, thus qualifying him to play in the World Cup (2011). There he faced Spanish number one and super-GM Francisco Vallejo Pons in the first round; he fought back from a loss in the first game to square the two-game mini-match, but lost one and drew one game in the rapid game tiebreaker to exit the tournament. He placed 5th in the American Continental Championship in May 2013, and with his sister who placed 6th, qualified for the World Cup (2013). There, he faced and lost to Azeri GM Teimour Radjabov in the first round and was eliminated from the Cup. In July 2014, Cori placed 2nd in the 5th Ibero-American Individual Championship behind Paraguayan GM Axel Bachmann Schiavo.
In May 2015, he was 3rd at the American Continental Championship and thereby qualified for the World Cup 2015.
Tournaments
In 2010, he scored 6.5/9 at the Reykjavik Open 2010 to take 6th place, was =2nd (5th on count back) at the 28th International Open in Andorra with 7/9 and =4th (11th on countback) at the 4th International Open in Pamplona, Spain. In April 2011, he placed =3rd in the 4th Simon Bolivar Open held in May in Argentina. In September 2011, Cori placed clear first in the 1st Marcel Duchamp International Open in Buenos Aires and in November he scored 6.5/9 at the 2nd Latin American Chess Cup 2011. In July, he scored 6.5/9, a half point from the lead, in the 18th International Open in Balaguer, and in October 2012, scored a par-for-rating 6/9 at the Chigorin Memorial (2012). Cori started 2013 with a decisive win with 8/9 (+7 =2) at the Copa IPD 2013 "Categoria Especial" in Peru. 2013 started with the 1st and 2nd Magistral IPDs in Lima; Cori's performance was roughly par for rating, although the slight loss of points he did suffer was mainly due to a loss to his sister in the first Magistral. In May-June 2013, Cori (and his sister Deysi) placed =1st in the 1st International Open in Arequipa in Peru with 5.5/7. In June, he scored 7/9 to place =2nd at the 21st International Open at Montcada i Reixac in Spain and followed this result in July with 8/10 (=4th, a half point behind the 3 co-leaders) at the 33rd International Open held in Benasque Huesca in Spain, losing only to his sister, followed by outright 1st at the Ciutat de Balaguer International Open - also in July 2013 - with 7.5/9 ahead of Vladimir Burmakin. In September 2013, Cori scored 8/10 in the Hostafrancs Open in Spain to place =2nd, half a point behind outright winner Baskaran Adhiban. He finished 2013 with =1st at the Panama Open and =2nd at the World U18 Championship.
The early part of 2014 was quiet. In June, Jorge played in the XXII International Open in Montcada i Reixac, in Spain, and placed =3rd with 6.5/9, half a point behind the joint winners Ni Hua and Yaroslav Zherebukh. In the following month (July 2014), he was =1st at the 35th International Open at Benasque in Spain with 7.5/9 alongside Chanda Sandipan, Miguel Illescas Cordoba, Hrant Melkumyan, Mikhail Mozharov and Cristhian Cruz Sanchez. Immediately afterwards, he participated in the 16th International Sant Marti Open in Barcelona where he placed =2nd, having scored 7/9, half a point behind the winner Karen H Grigoryan. In March 2015, he was equal first alongside Axel Bachmann Schiavo at the Copa Latina de Ajedrez 2015 in Buenos Aires with 7.5/9 and 2nd at the 46 Abierto Ciudad de Mar del Plata. In July 2015, Cori was =2nd (3rd on tiebreak to Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga) behind the winner Baskaran Adhiban at the powerful Benasque Open and =2nd (3rd on tiebreak to Karen H Grigoryan) behind Johan Salomon at the de Sitges International Open.
Olympiad
Cori played board 3 scoring 7.5/11 for Peru at the Chess Olympiad (2010). He played board 1, scoring 6.5/11 at the Chess Olympiad (2012) in Istanbul. He played board 3, scoring 6.5/11 at the Chess Olympiad (2014).
Ratings and Rankings
Cori's highest standard rating to date was 2630 in August 2014 when he was ranked #10 Junior in the world, his highest ranking to date although he has reached the ranking on several other occasions.
