SAM SHANKLAND
(born Oct-01-1991, 33 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Sam Shankland is a grandmaster from Walnut Creek, California. He tied for first in the 2008 World under-18 championship (thereby gaining his IM title) and was California state champion in both 2008 and 2009. He won the USA Junior Championship (2010) from Ray Robson and Parker Bi Guang Zhao on tiebreak. He was awarded the grandmaster title after earning his third GM norm at the Berkeley International (2011).

Qualifying for the World Cup (2011) through Zonal 2.1, Shankland beat Hungarian super-GM Peter Leko in the major upset of the first round, but fell in the second round to Indian GM and 2008 World Junior Champion Abhijeet Gupta. The US Championship (Group B play-off) (2011) took him as far as the US Championship (Knock-out) (2011) stage, before Gata Kamsky eliminated him. He qualified for his second World Cup, to be held in 2015, when he was runner-up on tiebreak behind Julio Ernesto Granda Zuniga at the 9th American Continental Championship held in October 2014.

Playing Board 5 reserve for the USA at the Tromso Olympiad (2014), Shankland scored a dominant 9/10 to win individual gold for board 5, with a TPR of 2831.

At the World Cup (2015), Shankland defeated Ivan Popov in the first round, but lost to compatriot Hikaru Nakamura in the second round rapid game tiebreaker to exit the tournament.

Shankland came in clear first at the US Championship (2018). His final game of the championship brought his rating over 2700 for the first time. He followed up with first at the Capablanca Memorial (Elite) (2018), a point and a half clear of outright second placed Aleksey Dreev. That brought his live rating to 2717.2 and his world rank to No. 30.

Shankland's good form continued in the American Continental (2018) which he won outright with 9/11, boosting his live rating to 2727.2 and live ranking to #27 in the world. His result in the American Continental qualified him to compete in the World Cup (2019). There he lost in the first round blitz tiebreaks to Eltaj Safarli.

In June 2021, he won the Prague Masters with 5.5/7 and a performance rating over 2900, the best result in the tournament's history. He entered the FIDE World Cup (2021) as the 31st seed, with a rating of 2691. After receiving a bye in the first round, he defeated in succession Baadur Jobava, Alexander Areshchenko, Rinat Jumabayev, and Peter Svidler. In the quarterfinals he lost on tiebreaks to former world championship challenger Sergey Karjakin, 4–2. His performance earned him a spot in the 2022 FIDE Grand Prix.

Shankland maintains a website at www.samshankland.com. He is one of the three owners of Killer Chess Training Academy. He has also written the books "Small Steps to Giant Improvement: Master Pawn Play in Chess" and "Small Steps 2 Success: Mastering Passed Pawn Play." He is a prolific author at the online platform Chessable.com.

Feb-09-11  hellopolgar: well his name is missing from the newest Grand Master list published by FIDE...poor guy...
Feb-11-11  twinlark: He's fine. The USCF must have put his papers in late, as his title application is up for ratification at the 2nd quarter Presidential Board meeting: http://ratings.fide.com/title_appli...
Apr-19-11  zubenator: I saw an interview with him today, and I thought he kinda sounded like a jerk. not a fan.
Apr-19-11  MaxxLange: The interview with Klein? I thought he seemed nice enough
Apr-19-11  Nina Myers: <The interview> How about posting the link?
Apr-19-11  MaxxLange: I saw it on the round 4 live coverage from yesterday's US Championship. They have archives at http://www.saintlouischessclub.org/..., but I can't direct link to it
Apr-19-11  Nina Myers: Thanks <MaxxLange>, here is the direct link: http://uschesschamps.blip.tv/file/5...

<zubenator ...he kinda sounded like a jerk> That's bulllshit!

Apr-20-11  wordfunph: “Today I thought I played extremely well. Last year it took me nine rounds to get 2.5 points.”

- GM Samuel Shankland (after collecting 2.5 points after three rounds in 2011 U.S. Chess Championship)

Apr-22-11  hellopolgar: this guy just eliminated Alexander Onischuk...and he did it in style too!!!
Apr-22-11  wordfunph: GM Shankland marches to the Finals by beating GM Onischuk 1.5-0.5 in the playoff.

..and now the cast is complete with GMs Gata, Shulman, Hess and Shankland.

Gata may be the favorite to win the title but GM Hess will give him a good fight.

Apr-23-11  James Bowman: G.M. elect Shankland holds former world champion challenger Gata Kamsky to a draw even having a slight edge with a minor piece vs two extra pawns.

Hess holds Shulman to a draw too.

Up and commings not dissapointing the fans U.S. open better than expected inspite of Nakamura's absence.

My general observations are that both Shankland and Hess play solid but persistant chess and press for an advantage with out being overly risky. Both seem skilled in the endgame for their level.

Sam Shankland seems likely to enter the 2600 club quickly IMHO.

HeMateMe: In the final, Armaggedon game to determine 3rd place at the US championship, Shank bid 20 minutes to get black w/draw odds, Hess bid 19 min 55 seconds.

No matter, Shankland won, with white.

ketchuplover: Down goes Leko! (first game of world cup)
Aug-28-11  wordfunph: great win against Leko! interesting game tonight with Shankland handling white.
Aug-28-11  fab4: Great name !

I thought my eyes were seeing Samarkand at first.. but it's getting late. .. that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Aug-28-11  notyetagm: USA! USA! USA!

Leko must win a big game tomorrow, and he is *not* known for clutch wins.

Aug-29-11  positionalgenius: I think his win over leko might be good enough to make it to "notable games"...
Aug-29-11  notyetagm: <dangerhump: Shankland accepts draw and advances. Yay, chessbucks!>

USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

Aug-29-11  Nf3em: Congratulations GM Sam Shankland!!! nice games against GM Peter Leko ... ;-)
Aug-29-11  Strongest Force: Sam stuck the Shank where the sun don't shine: sstswtsds!
Feb-24-12  dangerhump: After his win against Leko and a victory in this years NIC, Shankland is conspicuously absent in the lineup for the 2012 US Championship.
