JACQUELINE PIATIGORSKY
(born Nov-06-1911, died Jul-15-2012, 100 years old) France (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

Jacqueline Piatigorsky (née Jacqueline Rebecca Louise de Rothschild) was a French-American chess and tennis champion, author, sculptor and a member of the Rothschild banking family of France. In her memoirs she wrote, on her introduction to chess at the age of six, "I loved the game, the pieces, how they moved, the challenge to find a solution to the infinite combinations. I had actually fallen in love. ... With a chess set, it was impossible to be bored."(1) She came to the United States following the Nazi occupation of France with her husband, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.

During the 1950s and 1960s she was one of the strongest women players in the United States, winning a bronze medal on board two for the 1957 Women's Olympiad team and finishing second in the 1965 U.S. Women's Championship. In the 1960s, she was the second highest USCF-rated female chess player in the United States.

She was perhaps best known as a tournament organizer and sponsor, particularly of the unfinished Fischer - Reshevsky (1961) match between Robert James Fischer and Samuel Reshevsky, and the First Piatigorsky Cup (1963) and Second Piatigorsky Cup (1966) tournaments.

As an American, Piatigorsky was also a tennis player of note, being competitive at the national level.

Kday101: In the 70s she helped pay for our high school team from Los Angeles to fly to the National High School Chess Championships. We tied for first. It was a fantastic experience and I will always be thankful for this wonderful generous woman. Merci, Jacqueline! Happy birthday.

Joshka: To show you how far the World Chess Championship has fallen.....this lady sponsored the Fischer-Reshevsky Match in 1961, a non-titled match at that, and this match was scheduled for 16 games! We get 12 for a titled Word Championship Match in 2012!!.

Ms. P passed away july 15, age 100. I do wish she had kept her tournament running, we have so few good ones here, these days.

Jul-23-12  brankat: A very fine person!

I didn't know about her being also a sculptor. After seeing the photos of some of her work (provided here by <Riverbeast>) I'd say she was a talented artist, too.

R.I.P. Mrs.Piatigorsky.

Jul-23-12  andrewjsacks: Those of us who had the honor and great good fortune to know her personally benefited in many ways, as did American chess as a whole. She was truly one of a kind, and in terms of our nation's chess heritage, her name should be emblazoned shoulder to shoulder with the greatest players we have produced.
Jul-23-12  talisman: thanks for the memories.

Sep-08-13  TheFocus: Nice article. I am mentioned in it.
Sep-08-13  JoergWalter: <TheFocus> respect. <Nikolai Brunni (Honolulu, HI, USA) has found several of Jacqueline Piatigorsky’s games in Chess Life, 1955>

Now, I have an indication that you are not <Eric Schiller> :-)

Sep-08-13  TheFocus: It's a ficticious name to throw <AJ> off my tracks.
Sep-08-13  TheFocus: It's a shame that only 6 of her games are available. I have several not in here I will submit.

Don't you think her life would make a good chess movie?

Sep-08-13  JoergWalter: With Merryl Streep in "the devil plays 3 knights"?
Sep-08-13  JoergWalter: <TheFocus: It's a ficticious name to throw <AJ> off my tracks.>

Oh, how tricky you are. But <AJ> is a first class watchdog and won't let you off.

Nov-06-14  PhilFeeley: Since she was quite an active player, there should be more of her games here.
Nov-06-14  Nosnibor: <PhilFeely> To help your request for more games of this lady despite <TheFocus> offering to submit more games of this player I append a game that she won in Los Angeles in 1952 during a County Championship.
