Aug-31-04  refutor: i dunno...i realize that bogatyrchuk represented canada but wouldn't that be like saying spraggett is a portugese GM. do you consider tyomkin a canadian GM? he will be playing for the canadian team in the olympiad? or shabalov an american GM?
Aug-31-04  iron maiden: Did Bogatyrtschuk become a Canadian citizen? If so then I consider him a Canadian GM. Spraggett, though, still holds a Canadian citizenship, so I don't consider him Portugese.
Sep-01-04  lao tzu: Maurice Fox wasnt a GM?
in the 1970s i and a bunch of young upstarts played a batch of 5 min games (in florida) with an elderly gent claiming to be Maurice Fox (ex- canadian champ)...the man was unbeatable : ) * <visher> Robert Hamilton plays speed chess at worldchessnetwork... great player
Sep-14-04  ruylopez900: Congrats to Pascal for his title.

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

He will be providing commentary for Skripchenko-Krush.

Oct-18-04  Pawsome: Another Canuck weighing in (probably long after the discussion has lapsed) Bogatyrchuk was Maths professor teaching at a university back east for a long time, I believe. I recall an article on him in Canadian Chess Chat, the 'zine put out by PM Kim Campell's ex old man, one Nathan Divinsky, who was also a math proff. If Divinsky had made GM he'd have been the only Canadian GM to sleep with a Canadian PM. Now that's a stat worh pondering.
Oct-19-04  Lawrence: A GM with a PM, that would have been great.

Divinsky and Mr. Keene co-authored "Warriors of the Mind."

Oct-20-04  Pawsome: "Warriors of the Mind" not to be confused with "Mindless Warriors" the forthcoming double biography of the Bush pilot George Dubya and Ronald "MacDonald" Regan authored , I'm told by David Frum.
Dec-01-04  flamboyant: hi guys, do you know if Pascal is from Québec? just wondering .. ;)
Feb-27-05  TheWhiteRider: Pascal is from Quebec, living in NY and dating the lovely Irina Krush.http: //www.chessvideo.com/authors/krush.htm
Feb-27-05  PinkPanther: That link doesn't work.
Feb-28-05  Avion: Pascal is actually from Montréal and more precisely from Repentigny(near MTL)...He also has a beatiful sister who is about 18 who won many pricez when she were younger since she "quit" chess to study to university and get a "real" job...They are both very cool to talk to and are blitz fan(and monster!) Seriously, they are better in blitz than in classical games.

Oct-26-05  howardtheduck: The charbonneau familly is really into chess, pascal his siter and father all play chess. And pascal's dad is a real wizz at math... guess it can help!
Nov-18-05  refutor: charbonneau plays Alexey Dreev in the first round of the world chess cup http://www.fide.com/tournaments/wor...
Nov-20-05  lentil: you're all forgetting about GM peter biyiasis. however, yanofsky, suttles and biyiasis were all foreign born (poland, U.S., greece, respectively). i believe spraggett was the first canadian-born canadian GM.
Nov-20-05  lentil: is there a time limit for getting the rating over 2500 after getting the 3 gm norms?

IMlday: Actually Bohatirchuk's (as he Anglicized his name) forte was radiology, not math. He was a Doctor and ran the Red Cross in the Ukraine during WW2. Pascal probably doesn't care about the GM title, just wants to play good moves. Dreyev is so booked up that his head might fall off at any moment.
Dec-28-05  THE pawn: <so booked up that his head might fall off at any moment> hahaha
Jan-13-06  DutchDunce: Charbonneau just scored his final GM norm. Since he already achieved 2500, he will now be awarded the GM title. Congratulations!
Jan-13-06  tldr3: Congratulations to a great Canadian Champion!! GM Pascal Charbonneau. All the best.
Jan-13-06  Koster: <DutchDunce> Unless they screw up, like they did with Finegold. He missed by half a point here, but I thought he had three already.
Jan-13-06  e4Newman: Tres bien bonhomme Pascal!
Jan-13-06  THE pawn: euh...sans commentaires...
