JointheArmy: Actually I'm sure he confessed now as if he didn't confess - his rank would be a guest permanently instead of a pawn.
Sep-03-07  square dance: ok, thanks. of course i might rather just have my account permanently locked. who wants to show their face after being busted for cheating?
Sep-04-07  virginmind: thats strage, i was sure that cheating at 5 min blitz its impossible because of too litle time to give the moves to the chess software and then to post the move the soft replies etc. now it seems thats possible. i'd even say its possible at 4, or even 3 min blitz too!

the only cheat proof remains the bullet, but then again, thats not quite chess at all.

It's rather simple for cheaters to pull off 5 minute games especially with increments. All they do is get two computers, preferably one a desktop and the other a laptop then sign in with two accounts. One account will follow the account you are playing so whoever you play the other computer will have the game loaded on the screen. Then all the cheater has to do is press add kibitzer and then Rybka or whatever evaluates each position in real time without you moving any of the pieces. It does this all automatically so there is no time wasted given a high speed connection.

I'm assuming Avtosh blitzed out his opening so there's nothing suspicious and maybe even could have made bad moves on purpose. If he only consulted an engine on critical positions its hard to see how they would catch him.

There are other ways of course such as the actual hacking of the system like what happened to chess21 a while ago. I'm sure bullet isn't even safe with enough creativity.

Sep-04-07  virginmind: <jointhearmy> oops. then, with the system you've described, what possible arguments do playchess.com admins have to catch a cheater? i mean, like you've said, i would only cheat on some 5-6-7 critical moves/moments, and it should be enough for me to win most of the games. anybody of a certain level in chess can make very good moves and even guess at times the best available move on a given position, and so if this happens only 5-6-7 times in a game, what grounds has a playchess admin to say i'm cheating?

ok, lets say one method is to spot the counter intuitive, non-natural (but excellent) moves, which supposedly only a computer (or top gm, which i'm not) would spot, but even those are rather rarely seen in games, don't you think so?

JointheArmy: <virginmind> Really I don't know the grounds of their accusations, but I'd assume its intuitive. Also they have a few years of experience catching cheaters such as I remember someone talking about a guy pretending to be Korchnoi (of all people) years ago. I wasn't around then, but Korchnoi would be the last person I would pick as he seems like one of those "I don't play on the internet because everyone cheats" kinda people.

I'd guess another way they could have caught him is track all the IP's of the observers to see if any are in the same city as him. If there is always one observer that always follows his games and is from the same area then that's a signal as well. Then again if avtosh got creative, he could have used proxies and then this wouldn't have worked.

Yes, Safarli won the Essent Open. :-)

Apr-02-08  timhortons: last night naka set the record of 3000 elo at 1 minute game at icc, its a 67 straight win, the last 6 game was against eltaj safarli, he was crushed 6 in a row, had he drawn one game naka for sure would sleep so disgusted
Apr-02-08  you vs yourself: <naka for sure would sleep so disgusted> over a drawn bullet game@icc? I doubt it.

Nakamura seems to live at ICC. One drawn bullet game could mean more time Naka needs to spend getting his rating up. So that could in fact = loss of sleep.

Aug-05-08  actinia: My quality of life has improved dramatically since quitting bullet. I peaked at 2470 playchess. God, what a nightmare the bullet-addicted lifestyle is.
Aug-05-08  dumbgai: Eltaj Safarli is leading the World Junior Championship right now with 4/4.

Aug-08-08  VinnyRoo2002: I love the way this kid plays. I have no idea how good he'll become (I know he's pretty damn good already), but there's something really beautiful and original about the way he plays chess. I get a feeling he will climb up the rankings pretty rapidly.
