Feb-12-06  RisingChamp: Try doing it in the 5 seconds that you have- 10 seconds to hear the question and then you have to be an expert to fire in a google question quick and accurate enough to give you the accurate answer and to give that answer to the friend.
Feb-13-06  Jim Bartle: I assume the show is not broadcast live, where the friend could be watching and searching?

Parsifal: In Australia, until recently the host has said " Let´s hope the P-A-F has the google ready."

When Rob Fulton won the million there last year he openly admitted that he had two friends with google ready in the same room for his PAFs.

Then, last year, Celador changed the rules so that if they believe the PAF was helped or had access to materials/google, they may withold payment. This same alteration occurred in Aussie last month.

When Mrs Shand won a million on The Vault 2 years ago, she had to answer 6 questions down the phone in a minute to do so.

The first 3 had been heard already on the show. For the fifth " Who wrote Tinker,Sailor,Soldier,Spy ", we heard a pause of 36 secs. Then came -
"John le Carré"
Divine inspiration?

She had 8 secs left to tell Davina McCall that JFK´s wife´s maiden name was " Bouvier". She did.

Note also, for those who like coincidences, that the first person to win the million on WWTBAM? was Judith Keppel. That´s her maiden name.
The name of her second husband was Shand.
So, if you want to be the first person to win a million on a UK TV game show, it helps to be Mrs Shand.

Feb-15-06  Jim Bartle: Parsifal: The show is taped, right? It's not as if the friend can be watching the show live, and googling before getting the call?

tamar: thanks <Parsifal> for that bit of analysis to to the Plaskett vs Miles, 1986 game.

< I now think that the critical line was 20...Qe7 21 Nxf7 Qxa3 22 Bxg6 hxg6 23 Nh6+ Kh7 24 h4!, which I think is at least equal for white.>

I think it proves who you are.

Can you give a verbal explanation why Black has trouble converting his material edge in the position after 24 h4. I assume it is because the threat of 25 Rf7+ Ng7 26 Rd8 would leave the queen fighting alone, but Shredder thinks 24...Qa5 prevents that.

Parsifal: I mainly thought about 24...Qc5, to which my recommended response is 25 Rd3.

24...Qa5!?
Hmmm....
I´ll get back to you...

Parsifal: The verbal explanation is easier; it´s not much of a material advantage, is it? 9 points vs 8 if you like.
And his queenside pieces are still on the bench.

Parsifal: My feeling, after 24..Qc5 25 Rd3 was that white has very active play, e.g 25...b5 26 Rf7+ Ng7 and now, perhaps 27 Nf4... But there are other possibilities for white which also might be viable after 25 Rd3. Should any kibitzer here care to refute/chip in - be my guest!

keypusher: Nice to have you here, Mr. Plaskett!
Mar-22-06  Chesschatology: Jim- yours was the first chess book I ever read, aged 14 or so, "Play to win". I knew nothing, understood nothing, but I did use it to learn notation, and lots of impressive sounding opinions. As such I, then about 90 BCF, proudly told a friend of my parents, a master level ish player, that the opening in chess was overrated in importance, and that draws were killing the game. I would like to re-read it now I'm a bit older!

ray keene: apropos coincidences and the name shand-wasnt diana princess of wales a shand kydd on her mothers side , while camilla current consort of my old trinity college cambridge landing mate hrh the prince of wales was also a shand qua her maiden name. this might need a spot of checking but i am pretty sure its close to being right if not spot on!

Parsifal: Well, you´re certainly on to something there, Raymondo.

And, should you want the full spiel, here´s example 184 from my files -

(184) Keeping it in the family
In early June 2004 a nurse from Scotland won the highest ever prize offered on ITV´s The Vault quiz show: one million Pounds. To do that she had to successfully answer six questions down a telephone line - the answers to three of which had already been given earlier in the show. At the quizzing.co.uk site certain voices were raised suggesting that some of the big TV quiz shows were deliberately excluding some applicants. I did not believe that for an instant, and noted, for the benefit of those who were determined to see conspiracy everywhere, that the first winner of the million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Judith Keppel, was married to a man who had written comedy scripts for Jasper Carrot, and Carrot is a director of the company that made WWTBAM? Then on June 16th 2004, I chipped in at a thread at the quizzing.co.uk site -

More re innocence and coincidence
There seems to be some disagreement about this. ... ... ...The Peerage seems to think them still man and wife - ... ... ... And at Worldroots she is depicted as a descendant of Mary Tudor, and still married to Shand - Descendants of Mary Tudor, Princess of England(gen 16-1 to 16-69 of 19 generations) XVI-6 (XV-5-3) 1 Judith Cynthia Aline Keppel Born 18 August 1942 Married (1) 2 April 1964 Diss.1980 Desmond Leon Corcoran Married (2) 1985 Neil H. Shand Children, Generation XVII-5 ... ... ...
Genealogy expert, Leo van de Pas, observes -

Judith's grandfather is the first cousin of Sonia Keppel and this makes Judith and Camilla 3rd cousins. Judith (and Camilla) are descendants of Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond an illegitimate son of King Charles II and they are definitely descendants of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. In the latest Burke's Peerage and Judith Keppel married (1) Desmond Corcoran and they have three children and then they divorced. Judith then married Neil H. Shand but seems to go about with her maiden name. Shand? You will say. Yes, that is Camilla's maiden name, perhaps Neil Shand is related to her as well. ... ... ...Leo van de Pas

Parsifal: So then, for those who never tire of seeing smoke and conspiracy in who gets on or succeeds or is destroyed by UK TV Game Shows - a) The first winner was ... married to a script writer for current Celador Director, Jasper Carrott. The gentleman´s name is Shand b) She is a direct descendant of the royal mistress, Keppel. c) She is a cousin of Camilla Parker-Bowles (and could pass for her sister). d) Parker Bowles had the maiden name Shand. van der Pas speculates that she may be related to Neil Shand. e) Diana Spencer´s mother took the married name of Shand Kydd. f) Although I am not definitely sold that the death of Lady Diana was suspicious, I am also far from satisfied that it was not, and welcome the official inquiry into her death in FRANCE. g) Two contestants destroyed by winning the top prize on Millionaire (but who, in my opinion, were innocent and treated dreadfully by Celador) were CHARLES and DIANA. h) Mrs Keppel was only able to answer the One Million Pound question: "Which of these kings was married to Eleanor of Acquitaine?" because she had taken a holiday in FRANCE that summer and one day " ...whilst mooching around in a town ..." had wandered into a churchyard where she spotted Eleanor of Acquitaine´s TOMB. i) Judith Keppel (along with a few other people) is a direct descendant of Eleanor of Acquitaine. So, you see, it´s all rigged.

Then, on August 8th 2004, I noted something else, and promptly commented on it at the same thread -

Another Millionaire winner called Mrs Shand
I only learn, via the post before this, that the winner of the million on The Vault was called Mrs Shand. So, if any of you STILL do NOT think it is ALL RIGGED, consider this which I posted on page 10 of this thread - (The above list) ANOTHER Mrs Shand the first winner of One Million Pounds on an ITV Quiz Show...?¿

Benzol: Isn't Judith Keppel one of the "Eggheads".
Aug-30-07  mack: <Benzol> She is indeed. It seems as if it's obligatory that she gets asked the sports questions.

Benzol: <mack> Thanks for the confirmation. As a result I was looking at some of the other Eggheads and found out the C J De Mooi has apparently been a Mensa chess champion. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CJ_De_...

I wonder how many other players are Mensa members?

Sep-02-07  mack: <Benzol> I found a reference to CJ in the September 2005 CHESS magazine. Very quick and not at all interesting, but it did mention that one of the posers he set for viewers at the end of a show was - 'How many knights does each player have at the beginning of a game of chess - 1, 2 or 4?'

Buggered if I know.
