NGOC TRUONG SON NGUYEN (born Feb-23-1990, 35 years old) Vietnam [what is this?] IM (2002); GM (2004); World U10 Champion (2000); Champion of Vietnam (2014). Nguyen is one of Vietnam's top players, and has in recent years been ranked the country's #2 player after Le Quang Liem. In 2000, he won the world under-10 championship and four years later became a Grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 10 months. In 2004, he was voted as athlete of the year in Vietnam. In 2008, he was runner up to Ivan Saric in the World U19 Youth Championship held in Vietnam. In 2010, he was =1st in the Biel Chess Festival (2010), but came second on tiebreak to Fabiano Caruana. He qualified through the 2011 Asian Continental Championship to play in the World Cup (2011), and defeated Chinese GM Li Chao in the first round. In the second round he lost in the 10 minute rapid-game tiebreaker to the eventual winner, Russian GM Peter Svidler. He came 5th in the FIDE World Blitz Championship (2013) in June 2013, 1 point behind the winner, compatriot Le Quang Liem, and half a point behind the three joint 2nd place getters. He qualified for the World Cup (2013) via Zonal 3.3 and defeated Vladimir Eduardovich Akopian in the first round, but lost to Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin in the second round, and was thereby eliminated from the event. He won the gold medal for board 2, playing for Vietnam at the Chess Olympiad (2014). In March 2014, he won the HD Bank International Open with 7/9 and in December 2014 he won the Vietnamese Championship. In March 2015, he came 2nd in Zonal 3.3 and qualified for the World Cup 2015. Later that month, he was =3rd at the HD Bank Cup 2015 with a scored of 6.5/9. Nguyen qualified from Zonal 3.3 to play in the World Cup (2015) where he defeated Polish GM Robert Kempinski in the first round only to lose to Russian super-GM Evgeny Tomashevsky in the second set of rapid (10+10) tiebreakers in the second round, thereby bowing out of the event. Nguyen's highest rating and ranking to date is 2665 in April 2015 when he was ranked #81 in the world. He first entered the top 100 in May 2010 when he was still a Junior (ie: U20).
