saffuna: <plang><That was a difficult shot ; Butler was falling down when he caught the ball and put it back up. I'm not sure it is fair to criticize the defense on that one.>

Just saw it in detail. The defense was good. Butler pushed off. Nothing was called, as usual in last-second plays. (See Michael Jordan-Byron Russell and Reggie Miller-Michael Jordan.)

plang: Dick Groat - dead at 92.

At Duke he was an All-American in both baseball and basketball (twice). He remains the second-leading scorer in school history, averaging 23 points for the Blue Devils.

He was taken 3rd in the 1952 NBA draft by the Ft. Wayne Pistons but played only 26 games before enlisting in the Army in 1953. When he was discharged he was convinced by the Pirates GM Branch Rickey to give up basketball and concentrate on baseball. As a MLB shortstop he had a 14 year career highlighted by winning the MVP for the Pirates who went on to win the World Series. He won a 2nd title in 1964 as the shortstop for the Cardinals.

He was the first person to be admitted to the college basketball and baseball halls of fame.

chancho: The Heat got in via the play in tournament and knocked off the number 1 seed in the east.

Are they the first team to do this?

I believe so, but Jim might jump in and correct me.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

saffuna: Yes, Groat was the star shortstop on two World Series winners. Batting champion in 1960 back when that was a big deal.

perfidious: Bryce Young goes at number one; first Bama product to be first selection overall.

Texans traded up and had the next two picks.

  saffuna: The draft is tonight?

I suspect another Alabama player, Will Anderson, will be in the first five.

  perfidious: Anderson went third.

Will Levis still on the board at 7; Raiders on the clock. Doubt they will go for him. Lot of other needs (OL a big one).

Texans swapped with Cards to pick third as well as second--gave up a lot.

saffuna: I'm looking at ESPN draft analysis on youtube.

These guys speak a language I am not familiar with.

perfidious: Falcons took Bijan Robinson at 8; are they f***ing joking? They could have had Will Levis, Jalen Carter or Peter Skoronski, all players who would have helped them.

Bears and Eagles should send bouquets to Atlanta.

Update: Eagles chose Carter and must think they are in a dream.

saffuna: I wonder how much of a pay cut Bijan Robinson will have to take.

perfidious: Could easily see Levis dropping to Redskins at 16 now.

Lions grabbed a back at 12. There were greater needs.

saffuna: Hey, this is a family-friendly site.

What's this about "Levis dropping"?

perfidious: Yeah, I slipped up; at least I should have posted thus at Rogoff, or over at Doll.

keypusher: Celebrating the draft by watching baseball. The pitch clock didn’t seem terribly impactful to me, but I appreciated not seeing the hitters step out of the batters box. I have to say that little square in front of the catcher still drives me up a wall. Nobody got on base while I was watching so I couldn’t make any judgments about whether the bases were noticeably different. :-)

Been watching baseball since roughly 1968-69, and got on all those years without The Square, thank you very much. They should obliterate the sumbitch and have done.

perfidious: Redskins pick up CB Emmanuel Forbes; their front seven are terrific, but they needed help in the secondary. Well done.

perfidious: Patriots must have about s*** themselves when Christian Gonzalez dropped all the way to 17.

HeMateMe: The Bellagio Athletics? Looks like the 'A's are headed for the strip. Must be tuff being an Oakland sports fan these days. I suppose a lot of them glom onto the Warriors and claim the san fran team as their own.

First time ever, all four California teams made the NBA playoffs.

Kings went something like 2/18 on three pointers after the first quarter the other night. Sabonis was left wide open from 14 feet the entire game. He HAS to make and take those shots. The guy isn't Hank Finkle or Manute Bol. Sabonnis is built like a mobile power forward. He has to make wide open mid range jump shots, so the defense can't pack the paint.

plang: Will this be the year that Vegas finally wins its first Stanley Cup?

  saffuna: "Finally"?

Wasn't the team formed something like twelve minutes ago?

  perfidious: Maybe fifteen.

When I was in town while the Golden Knights made the Cup final in 2018, I sensed some disbelief--after all, mere expansion teams, except for Blues in the late 1960s under the strange playoff system operated by the NHL in their early years post-Original Six, did not have a snowball's chance of making a playoff in pro sports, much less going that far.

plang: The situation in the 1960s is not comparable to today. In 1967 the six expansion teams were lumped together all by themselves into a Western Conference with the winner qualifying for the finals - so an expansion team was guaranteed a spot in the finals.

saffuna: I remember the semifinal between the two old teams was the real final for years, until the Flyers won. I believe the "final" was a sweep for several years.

perfidious: <plang: The situation in the 1960s is not comparable to today....>

That is an understatement; NHL teams have been allowed to protect far fewer players in the two recent expansions, so fledgling teams could actually have some talent. In the 1960s, a team would never have had a crack at getting the equivalent of Marc-Andre Fleury in goal.
