Nov-10-06 | | twinlark: What's the difference between an engine running a 100 hour 28 ply analysis on a given variation vs running consecutive 50 hour 26 ply (say) analyses? The second stint would be set to start say three moves into the variation under scrutiny? Which approach would produce a more reliable outcome? |
|
Nov-10-06 | | Plato: <twinlark> I'm no expert, but my understanding is that the second type of analyses (two consecutive 50 hour sessions) would be more productive. This is because of something known as the "horizon effect." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizo... |

Nov-10-06 | | twinlark: Thanks <Plato>. BTW Happy 1000th kibitz! Traditionally, this is celebrated around here at Beer. |

Feb-01-07 | | twinlark: SOS
I'm having a problem with my single processor Shredder 10. I've had to reinstal it (including once or twice after uninstalling it) and when the window pops up asking that the serial number be typed into the five-digit fields, it won't accept them as the "OK" button is greyed out no matter how many times I uninstal or reinstal. (I have registered it online.) What happens then is that after about ten minutes, a sign pops up saying the serial number is invalid and a couple of minutes later the engine shuts down. Does anyone know what's going on?

|
Feb-01-07 | | twinlark: It's OK, I've sought online support. |

 | | BishopBerkeley: The ShredderChess website now offers a daily Chess puzzle with three levels of difficulty: http://www.shredderchess.com/daily-...
Google has included the daily ShredderChess puzzle into the items you can add to your personalized Google homepage: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?... http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en
Some very fine websites have offered "plug-ins" that can be added to ones personalized Google homepage. Perhaps <Chessgames.com> should confer with Google on offering the Game of the Day as a Google plug-in! Just a thought....

 | | WannaBe: Slight annoyance, whenever I start up my Shredder, and do some analysis with it, (usually with infinite analysis) it's slow... I looked at my task manager, my System Idle is using 80% of the CPU, my Shredder is using 10% with the others going to misc. stuff. I completely exit my Shredder program, restart it, now it's blazing fast, using 79% of the CPU with the rest going to misc. stuff... Don't know why exactly, just annoying. |
|
Nov-27-07 | | hitman84: <WannaBe>I haven't used Shredder but I have faced the problem with other UCI engines. The problem might be with the hash table size. Does the documentation contain anything about the Hash table ? Its optimal size ? The hash table size and the position is related to each other for a fixed depth.
Try experimenting with different hash sizes on your system. |
|
Nov-27-07 | | Tomlinsky: <WannaBe> I've noticed that it takes a lttle time to settle down when loading its bitbases for the first time. |
|
Nov-27-07 | | hitman84: I found this very helpful for setting an optimal hash table size. http://www.chessbase.com/support/su... |

 | | WannaBe: Well, here is the 'cute' thing, I have .75 gigs of ram on my system, (it came with 256, and I added another 1/2 gig...) The 'recommended' hash table size is 588 MB, and I did try to use 550 MB for a while, and it is slow! My hard drive goes nuts swapping files... I lowered it to 400 MB and it doesn't swap as much, but first time running, it's slow (as I described earlier...). So I just exit the program, and restart it. |
