Mar-26-10  TheTamale: RIP, Elena. I hope excelling at something you loved made your short life a joyful one.
Mar-26-10  weisyschwarz: The pawn is taken
before she became a Queen.
We don't know why or how
in this difficult position.
It looks like a tragic loss.
But somehow her Master will win.
Mar-26-10  swordfish: How horrible for someone so young to die! RIP, Elena; my condolences to her loved ones and friends.
Mar-26-10  Cercatore: R.I.P.
Mar-26-10  miguelito: R.I.P.
Mar-26-10  Scarlatti: I'm saddened by the passing of Elena Tairova. She was a beautiful and talented young talent taken from us so prematurely. My deepest condolences to her family. Surely, her legacy will go on. She will be greatly missed.
Mar-26-10  blessedman01: Very sad news. God Bless her family
Mar-26-10  wordfunph: may you rest in peace Elena..
Mar-27-10  stoy: Does anyone know what horrible ailment took the life of one so young and healthy looking?
Mar-27-10  zanshin: <stoy: Does anyone know what horrible ailment took the life of one so young and healthy looking?>

From what I have read, I believe she suffered from a type of cancer. I have no specifics or confirmation.

Mar-28-10  PHILOCHESS: Very sad news. R.I.P, Elena.
Aug-29-11  twinlark: She would have turned 20 today. R.I.P. Elena Tairova.

Mar-26-13  Abdel Irada: Elena, your eulogy was written long ago. Today we sing it again.

<Ah, broken is the golden bowl! the spirit flown for ever!

Let the bell toll! – a saintly soul floats on the Stygian river. ...

Come! let the burial rite be read – the funeral song be sung! –

An anthem for the queenliest dead that ever died so young –

A dirge for her, the doubly dead in that she died so young.>

—Edgar Allan Poe, "Lenore"

<<>In pace requiescas.<>>

Mar-26-13  dx9293: Seeing her as Player of the Day makes me so sad all over again. Rest in Peace, Elena.

Looking at her achievements through 2007, when she was 15-16 years old, Tairova would possibly be Russia's top female player today and one of the best in the world with a 2550-2600 Elo rating.

Mar-26-13  Karposian: She was such a brilliant talent, no doubt that she would probably have been one of the leading female players today like you said <dx9293>. This is still very, very sad.

  Stonehenge: Such a great player...

RIP

Mar-26-13  The Last Straw: RIP. You were very great, but you left too soon.
Mar-26-13  cro777: May she rest in peace.

In early 2008, Elena became ill and missed several tournaments. She later recovered, and returned to tournament successes. On March 16, 2010, Elena died from lung cancer at the age of 18, a grievous loss to Russian women’s chess.

perfidious: <Fiona Macleod: Lung cancer. Maybe from too much second hand smoke in chess clubs?>

Baseless speculation; even if one could somehow prove that this was so, a talented young lady left us far too soon. A more compassionate attitude would be welcome.

RIP Elena
