LLEWELLYN WALTER STEPHENS
(born Aug-16-1883, died Sep-30-1948, 65 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Llewellyn Walter Stephens was an important figure in the early days of the United States Chess Federation, organizing and financing many national level tournaments. He is best remembered, however, as the tournament director who mistakenly forfeited Arnold Denker after Samuel Reshevsky 's flag had fallen during a game in the 1942 U.S. Championship. For the full details, see the kibitzing to Reshevsky vs Denker, 1942. He was married to Maude Stephens. He was one-time secretary of the Manhattan Chess Club.

See ad at the bottom of the sixth column. Odd that he mentions nothing about proper clock management.
