GrahamClayton: Bills finished =1st with Duncan Suttles in the 1964 Las Vegas Open, both players finishing with a 6-1 score. They both had identical median scores, so a coin toss was made to decide the winner, which Bills won.

  Stonehenge: Perhaps this is him:

Apr-21-15  zanzibar: There's also a <William A Bills> from Texas, Houston in particular:

I also posted a 1964 game of his, a loss against Ken R. Smith, here:

Kenneth Ray Smith (kibitz #27)

Might he have spent some time in the Lone Star state?

Apr-21-15  zanzibar: I have a yearbook reference from 1943 in Seattle WA mentioning a William Bills:

<THE CHESS CLUB, sponsored by Mr. Stilwell and headed by Dean Bollman as chairman, keeps the chess players interested. The members are: Fred Ballantine, William Bills, Harry Blumkin, Edward Boulton, Jim Briggs, Jerry Gose, Carl Henion, Edward Kviz, Charles Miller, Grant Mueller, Bill Nervland, Gordon Sylliaasen, Dale Turner, Bruce Whitner.>

Yes: "Browne drew with William Bills of Texas"

The Californian Chess Reporter, Nov Dec 1968.

"Janis Joplin does not realize how Bills, veteran chess master and road creature, was hit with acid by a prankster." etc
