When Alfreds Hartmanis died, he left his family in difficult material circumstances.

In response, Master Fricis Apsenieks held a simultaneous exhibition at the Riga Chess Club on December 19, 1927. All proceeds of the event were donated to the family of Alfreds Hartmanis.

Karl Behting on the occasion of the death of Alfreds Hartmanis on July 27, 1927. Hartmanis died tragically young, at age 45.

"Hartmanis took the most active part in the local Riga chess life. As a man of slow and peaceful nature, Hartmanis was a very sympathetic opponent. His deep and highly respected combinations helped him to overcome difficult moments."

-Gedimin Salmins, "Fricis Apsenieks 1894-1941" (Liepaja 2006), p.36
