GrahamClayton: Loftsson died on the 16th of September 2009 in Los Angeles. He was 67.

Loftsson was a native of Iceland who moved to the Bay Area as a teenager and settled in Los Angeles a few years later. He reached Senior Master status, with a rating higher than 2400. He had to give up chess in the early 1980s after suffering ulcers that were aggravated by the tension of tournament play.

Nov-06-13  Bartacus: I played Loftsson 3 times 1977-80, as I transitioned from expert to master. We each won one game, with one draw. He was a nice man.

HeMateMe: If this guy couldn't get luft, well, then I just don't know...
Oct-11-24  wrap99: I recall speaking to him about a game during a tournament in 1977. It was a Betty Roberts event held at Cal State Northridge.
Oct-12-24  Granny O Doul: I remember transitioning from expert to master. It was scary, but it felt like the right move, as I always felt like a master inside.

I know "Julius Loftsson" mainly as a name from old Chess Lives. From his first and second names, I'm guessing his parents were already anticipating a move from Iceland.

perfidious: Loftsson was a name I associated with Lone Pine when I was still a class player, long before I went from expert to master and back, then to 2300 before dropping to expert again before making it for good.
