I'm trying to find the game, but as the article says, it doesn't seem to be available. But that was 11 years ago so maybe I'll find it.

OhioChessFan: Here's the position from the aforementioned column. The mainline is beyond belief.

Black to play and draw:

I'll bring the solution tomorrow.

Fusilli: <OCF> I think the idea is a stalemate with Black's king on h6. If 1...d1=Q 2.Bxd1 Kh6, black threatens Qxh3+ followed by Rh2 check and stalemate. But 3.Bg4 stops it.

So, 1...Kh6 must be the first move. If 2.Qd3 Rxg2. If 3.Qxg3 Rxg3 4.Rxg3 d1=Q+ draw.

I don't see anything better for white.

Fusilli: <ctd> Well... what if white doesn't take the rook? If 4.Kh2 Rxg1 and I am counting that Black's king gets to kill the d5 pawn and secure the draw by sending the king to h8 because white has the "wrong" bishop.

But if white wants to keep his rook with 4.Rd1, black captures Rxh3+ and I think white could win that with precise play.

So... 1...Kh6 2.Qd3 d1=Q! 3.Qxg3 Qxg1+! 4.Kxg1 Rxg2+! draw! That's my final answer!

If 3. Qxd1 then my original idea: 3... Qxh3+ 4.gxh3 Rh2+ and stalemate again.

Yes, that's the theme. But 1...Kh6 2. Qd3 d1Q 3. <Qxd2+> is winning for White.

And 1...Kh6 2. Qd3 d1Q 3. Qxd1 is another line to figure out, my favorite line of all. There is one definite draw that is mind-blowing and one that I'd have to let SF chew on for a long time.

Something is wrong there. You mean 2...Rxg2, not d1Q, right?

That's why in my second post earlier today I went for d1=Q instead of Rxg2. I posted the two variations I saw, with white responding either Qxd1 or Qxg3. Did I miss something?

OhioChessFan: I obviously conflated two different lines. I'll have another look in another hour.

OhioChessFan: After a long delay, here's a couple more lines:

1...Kh6 2. Qd3 d1Q 3. Qxd1 Rxe2! and I think 4. Qa1 is a draw.

Or the mind blowing 3...Qxh3+! 4. gxh3 Rh2+ 5. Kxh2 stalemate

Fusilli: That's pretty cool, <OCF>. Crazy position.
