Feb-24-12  cro777: International Correspondence Chess Master Walter Muir, recognized as the "Dean of American Correspondence Chess" was a cofounder of ICCF-US. He led American players into the international arena.

Muir started playing chess in 1917 and didn’t stop until shortly before his death in December 1999. Muir’s father was Canadian. As a result, he was active in both US and Canadian chess.

Muir was a nine time Canadian Correspondence Chess Association Champion, twice British Overseas CC Champion, 16 time champion of the Illinois CCA, winner of nine ICCF Master Tournaments, qualified seven times for ICCF World Championship second-round play, and played on four Olympiad teams for the United States. Muir was awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Master in 1971.

The Walter Muir Memorial, an invitational tournament sponsored by ICCF-US, got underway on 15 February, 2012.

perfidious: Near the end of Walter's life, I was fortunate to have the privilege of playing a correspondence game with him.

Walter was White and the opening was a Classical Pirc; I had prepared for an Austrian Attack, but he surprised me and we got into a middlegame which was about level after he avoided some of the most incisive lines. Later on, I managed to come up with a good idea and win.

RIP to a fine gentleman who was instrumental in the promotion of CC here in USA.

Oct-23-14  ljfyffe: <cro777>Zehr and MacDonald say "Walter Muir was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1905. His
parents were Canadian and lived for many years in Montreal. Walter's father was a meat company executive, whose job moved him to many cities
around the world. During one of those job transfers, son Walter was born."

FSR: I happen to have a copy of <My 75 Year Chess Career - An Autobiography of My Life> sitting next to me. I have to say that "An Autobiography of My Life" makes me wince. Holy redundancy, Batman!
