Feb-20-21  Nosnibor: It must be pure coincidence that Winston Churchill stated in the same year that Winston Churchill Doby was born that "This is our greatest hour" following the defeat over Nazi-Germany`s luftwaffe.

HeMateMe: Churchill: "We're waiting [for the German invasion]. And, so are the fishies."

MissScarlett: I don't think any other country had a Luftwaffe, but the point's a good one, although Churchill didn't become PM until May. Perhaps it was just the close physical resemblance.

keypusher: Can't have been too many black (or white, purple, or polka-dotted) men in America named for Winston Churchill who were born before Churchill became PM. Maybe Doby was named for the novelist.

HeMateMe: Is Churchill the only British PM to reenter Parliament, house of Commons or House of Lords, after having left office as PM? Churchill was voted out in 1945.

Just wondering. Very rare in the USA. I believe our second president, the very influential John Adams served in Congress after two terms in the White House. That would have been the 1790s, perhaps turn of the century.

You would be harder pressed to find one who didn't.

<I believe our second president, the very influential John Adams served in Congress after two terms in the White House. That would have been the 1790s, perhaps turn of the century>

Wrong on all accounts. John Adams, the ONE term president, never returned to Congress. His son, John Quincy Adams, did sit in the House of Representatives after his term as President. The only President to come back to the Senate after serving as President is Andrew Johnson who got elected as a Senator from Tennessee in 1875. He died four months later.

WannaBe: I am totally ashamed, to not have known this person, or any knowledge of his achievements; during my years attending the great institution at Westwood.

Very deeply ashamed... Especially since I spent my life at the Math & Science Hall. And the other half of my life at Boelter Hall.

Feb-25-21  Z 000000001: <In 1971 Doby started the Academic Advancement Program ... now used all over the country ... to widen college access for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

Doby co-founded the community-based Young Black Scholars Program, which has helped to prepare thousands of young students for college in its 14-year history. ...

“No written word or spoken plea can teach the children what they should be, nor all the books on all the shelves, it’s what the teachers are themselves,” ...>

stoy: Is he possibly related to Larry Doby, the first black player in the American League?

perfidious: Despite my humorous comment above, there is no apparent evidence that he was related to Larry.
