(born Jan-16-1907, died Feb-1987, 80 years old) United States of America

Henry Gross was California State Champion in 1952. In 1928, he tied for first place in the seventh California State Championship, but lost the playoff to A.J. Fink. In the late 1920s, Gross was the University of California champion. In 1953, he won the Northern California Open and took second place in the California championship, behind Herman Steiner. In 1955, Gross tied for first place in the first official San Francisco Championship, but lost the playoff to James Schmitt. In 1955, he won the Northern California Championship. Gross was a former president of the California State Chess Federation. He was champion of the Castle Chess Club in Oakland over a dozen times and a lawyer by profession.
