 | | MissScarlett: There was an Alfred and Arthur Eva active in Manchester/Lancashire chess circles during the 1930s, presumably related. |

 | | GrahamClayton: Alongside the team Olympiad run by the BCF in Folkestone in June 1933, there was a “General Congress” which consisted of a Premier Tournament and a Premier Reserve tournament. Eva played in the Premier tournament, finishing 11th of the 12 players with a score of 3/9. |

 | | WannaBe: Feels like government forum, lots of repeated information, but nothing new... Alfred and Arthur were related? Brothers? Father/Son? Cousins? Uncle/Nephew? Does anyone have <ANY NEW> and concrete information? Jolly good show then, carry on. As y'all was [sic]. |

<Mannbee> a rare error on your part! What is new is the game itself, freshly found in the Bluff Creek area and now uploaded for your consideration - the first evidence that <Alfred Eva> actually existed... This game is the chess equivalent of the PATTERSON-GIMLIN Bigfoot movie! Alfred Eva vs H Atkins, 1933 |

Mar-04-21 | | Gallicrow: As a chess playing member of the Eva family myself (I was originally Jon Eva but now use Jon D'Souza-Eva) I'm surprised I haven't looked into the chess playing Evas from Yorkshire before. I have a vague memory of playing in a county match for Hampshire against Yorkshire sometime in the early 1980s where my opponent asked me if I was related to "the Eva brothers". Anyway, I've dug into this a little bit and discovered that I am related to an Arthur Eva from Yorkshire and from about the right era, though whether it is the chess playing Arthur Eva I can't say yet. The one I am related to was called Arthur Llewellyn Eva and is my first cousin, three times removed (i.e. my great grandfather's cousin). Arthur Llewellyn Eva was born in South Africa in 1879 but lived in Cheshire / Lancashire from 1901 until his death in 1951. Here is the information I have been able to find for him on the excellent Family Search website:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/p... My initial research suggests that Arthur and Alfred Eva were not closely related. |

Mar-04-21 | | Nosnibor: There was a county match between Manchester and Leicestershire on the 25th March,1936 in which a certain A. Eva played board 2 and drew with Philip Wallis. I cannot ascertain whether this was Alfred or Arthur. |

 | | John Saunders: BCM, August 1942, p179: "Arthur Eva - Manchester Chess Club regrets to announce the death of its former member, Arthur Eva, Champion of the club in 1929 and for many years a leading Lancashire player. He is not to be confused with his brother Alfred Eva, champion of Manchester in 1938 and Cheshire Champion." The dates of birth (1879) and death (1951) for Arthur Eva posted here as of today's date are both wrong. Having checked on Ancestry.com, the correct dates appear to be b 26.11.1876, Bristol, d 30.05.1942, Cheshire. Finally, the two games from 1946 supposedly played by Arthur posted here should be reattributed to his younger brother Alfred (b 24.08.1882, Bristol, d 21.02.1974, Manchester). |

Sep-09-23 | | DataFly: Thanks John. I think Arthur was actually born on the 26th November, 1875, not 1876. There's a matching birth registration in Q4 1875 (mother's maiden name, Quick, is correct) and the 1939 register has his DoB as 26th November, 1875. |

 | | beatgiant: <FSR> He had white against Winter, can't you do something with "For Eva-Winter"? The song even already has some chess possibilities ("checkin' up," "pieces on the floor," "puzzles in his head"), but I'm not offering to write chess-themed lyrics for it. |

 | | beatgiant: <FSR> If you make a "Did You Evah" related pun, I might try to come up with some lyrics. But I'm never sure whether I'm being more amusing or annoying with those things. |
