perfidious: This is Graham Mitchell, who served in MI5 (British Intelligence), eventually rising to Deputy Director-General of the service, reporting to Sir Roger Hollis, father of Adrian, who became one of the top CC players.

Stonehenge: Postcards containing Cold War spy messages unearthed. The messages are covered in cryptic text based around a series of chess games and were posted in 1950 to Graham Mitchell, the then deputy director general of MI5.

FSR: I've played a few dozen correspondence games, and have always thought I was just playing chess! (For example, see K Thompson vs F Rhine, 1992 and F Rhine vs A Boerkoel, 1996.) Were my opponents actually trying to pass on the fruits of their espionage to me?!? I didn't know, I swear! No, don't waterboard me, please! Aiieeee!!

perfidious: <FSR> Little men have been listening in on your phone calls for a long while now-just a matter of time before you pay the piper!

BTW, Krakatoa, you may recognise me from the Wikipedia chess section as the notorious Hushpuckena.

perfidious: <Stonehenge> The article, while naming Mitchell as a suspect, does not mention that the Director General of MI5 from 1956-65, Sir Roger Hollis, was also investigated as a possible Soviet agent after his retirement.

While there was a great deal of circumstantial evidence, nothing conclusive came to light and no charges were ever brought against Hollis.

Jan-10-12  Benzol: Finally all his games from the First World Correspondence Ch are here.
Jan-10-12  King Death: < FSR: I've played a few dozen correspondence games, and have always thought I was just playing chess!>

That shows what you know!

Nov-30-14  ljfyffe: Mitchell came in 5th in that CC Championship 1 (1950-53) Final.
