Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-21-07  AlanWilkinson: Graeme Hall was a good friend of mine and close friend of Bruce Anderson when we were all young Canterbury students. Graeme did a degree in Electrical Engineering at Canterbury and after that I lost track of him.

Jonathan Sarfati: I remember him as a spectator every time I played in a junior or South Island champs in Christchurch, wondering who he was. Ari Nijman told me, and said he was very strong. I think my only games with him were transfer (known on the Internet by the crass American term "bughouse").
Feb-23-07  AlanWilkinson: Ari Nijman was an amazing character. He smoked like a chimney but often wound up smoking his matchstick instead when he was getting excited during a five-minute game. He used to play Alvin Hollander half the night "for money". But it was all double or quits so Ari would win a long string of games and eventually Alvin would win one so they would be quits and could go home. Ari's cry was "This is the very, very last - even if I win!" - but it never was. He didn't drive - said it was cheaper to take a taxi everywhere than own a car. He also reckoned he hardly ever slept but even if he died young he would have been awake more hours than anyone else.

Jonathan Sarfati: Is Ari still alive?
Sep-26-08  Benzol: <Jonathan> As far as I know he is but he must be a good age by now. He's still on the national ratings list.

Richard Taylor: I recall Nijman (I'm sure I played him in Correspondence Chess or my father did - but I recall seeing him around in the 60s and seeing his name), and Hollander (he beat me (in "friendly game") when I was in Chch in 1961 I think it was) - don't remember Hall.

Once I played in a Congress either at Chch or Dunedin and maybe I played Hollander then...

Jul-15-13  Hongkonger: The two games from 2009 are a different Graeme Hall
