Aug-23-11 | | paavoh: First! Viktor the Terrible continues his reign. |
Aug-23-11 | | Clodhopper: Wow, Aug 15-18. These old dudes rattled out 9 games in 4 days? A tough pace even for much younger masters.... |
Aug-23-11 | | Xeroxx: Are these guys still alive? |
Aug-23-11 | | GlennOliver: Korchnoi is phenomenal, winning a competitive tournament at the age of 80. Well played. |
Aug-23-11 | | GlennOliver: xeroxx,
Alive, intelligent and courteous. |
Aug-23-11
 | | Dionysius1: And having fun. |
Aug-23-11 | | diagonal: Viktor Korchnoi achieved a convincing victory, five wins, four draws, and only player to remain undefeated. After Taimanov, clear last, Korchnoi was already the second oldest of the ten participants - he is becoming the Methuselah of Chess. survey from my earlier posting on Korchnoi's chessgames - page:
<Those were the days: Aleksander Nikitin (best known for his years as successful chief trainer / second of Kasparov), Igor Zaitsev (one of Karpov's main trainers / analysts and seconds in a number of World Championship matches against Korchnoi and Kasparov; well-known also for his contributions to opening theory, especially in the Ruy Lopez), Mark Taimanov (who has at least once beaten six world chess champions, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Karpov, but reminds most famous for his notorious match loss against Fischer forty years ago), and as notable non-ex-soviets: Wolfgang Uhlmann (one of the leading French Defense experts; with Botvinnik and Korchnoi as Giants of the French), Lajos Portisch and Borislav Ivkov, the first ever Chess World Junior Champion sixty years ago... - and the indomitable Viktor Korchnoi:
These legendary players from the Botvinnik era compete in a round robin rapid tournament with the time control of 25min + 10 sec/move. Chief arbiter is Yuri Averbakh, currently the world’s oldest living grandmaster. Averbakh turns ninety next year. Unfortunately Boris Spassky, the world’s oldest living chess champion, who was also set to make an appearance, could not take part, eventually GM Oleg Chernikov took his place.> homepage with final crosstable:

 | | HeMateMe: Nice to have such a strong tournament, celebrating a world champion. Maybe Bobby Fischer will get a memorial tournament, when things settle down a bit... |
Aug-23-11 | | Bdellovibrio: <HeMateMe> maybe they ought to rename the blitz championship that follows the Tal memorial as so: "Fischer memorial blitz" |

 | | paulalbert: I have been sponsoring a Bobby Fischer Memorial Blitz Tournament( in March of 2010 and March of 2011 at the Marshall Chess Club in NY ) which I intend to continue. We've gotten good GM participation, but it's an open tournament. Of course it's nothing like the high visibility event for Botvinnik's 100th Birthday, either in caliber of participants or total financial rewards, but nobody seems to object because of Bobby's unfortunate behavior. Everybody prefers to just acknowledge and remember his magnificent performance at the chess board.
Unfortunately I am unlikely to be able to sponsor a 100th birthday memorial event for Bobby. I was a couple months older than Bobby and also will have my 100th birthday in 2043, for which I do not anticipate being present. Paul Albert |

 | | HeMateMe: Well done. A lot of chess greats have had emotional problems. I still like to pour over Fischer's games. |
Aug-23-11 | | Bdellovibrio: <I have been sponsoring a Bobby Fischer Memorial Blitz Tournament( in March of 2010 and March of 2011 at the Marshall Chess Club in NY ) which I intend to continue.> A fitting venue! Thanks, Mr. Albert, for all you do for American chess! |
Aug-23-11 | | waustad: The two oldest are leading and in last place. Taimanov is the only one born before 1930. |
Aug-23-11 | | Blunderdome: <Clodhopper: [...] These old dudes rattled out 9 games in 4 days?> These were rapid games, which CG initially posted as classical. I submitted a correction slip for one game and they fixed all of them. The time control was 25'+10". |
Aug-23-11 | | dumbgai: Too bad Spassky couldn't play. I'd like to see him finally beat Korchnoi. |
Aug-24-11 | | GlennOliver: Paul Albert -
"I was a couple months older than Bobby and also will have my 100th birthday in 2043, for which I do not anticipate being present." Play Giuoco Piano with gentle time controls and for sure you'll make the game last. Congratulations on the Bobby Fischer Memorial Blitz Tournament which will no doubt build momentum and establish itself firmly. |
Aug-24-11 | | kurtrichards: Where is Karpov? |
Aug-24-11 | | Clodhopper: The first tournament I followed in the newspapers was the 1966 Piatagorsky Cup, and Portisch and Ivkov were both in it. It's great to see these guys still playing chess and it makes me feel younger. too. |
Aug-25-11 | | Vladimir Zukhar: Congrats again Viktor from an old friend ("the stare") from your battles with Karpov. You are still World Class GM, with emphasis on "Class." VZ |
Aug-25-11 | | Vladimir Zukhar: Владими Zukhar Поздрав&-
яю еще раз Виктор от старого друга ("взгляд") из ваших боях с Карповы&. Вы по-прежн-
ему мировог& класса GM, с акценто&-

Aug-25-11 | | I play the Fred: <Mark Yevgenyevich>, you scored NO wins while the defector <Korchnoi> wins the tournament with NO losses!?!? This is unacceptable! It is our understanding that you, in connection with your preparations for this tournament, <again> refused the assistance of the fifth World Champion <M. Botvinnik>. <Memorial> tournament, you say? This is rubbish: Comrade Botvinnik is plagued by a head cold, nothing more. Comrade Taimanov, we shall relieve you of your <Master of Sport> medal with all haste! |
Aug-25-11 | | Beholder: <I play the Fred> LoL! |
Aug-25-11 | | whiteshark: I second that emotion! |
Aug-25-11
 | | LIFE Master AJ: May Viktor always win ... |

Aug-29-11 | | Knight13: They're just regular Fifth Columnists. |
