CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success.   WannaBe: This game ended my 9-game losing streak on GK...

I've got CG.com members to thank for the losing streak. Since they mostly took place in the <suenteus po 147>'s invitational tournament.

Jul-16-07  ganstaman: <WannaBe> Well done. Time for a 9-game winning streak.

One piece of criticism from me: "Pin and win." You pinned (and won...), but didn't follow through enough. I think 19. Bf3 wins a piece, right?

I like the final position of your pieces.

WannaBe: <ganstaman> Thanks for looking at my game, Shredder liked the sequence of 19. Bxf6 Qxf6 20. Rxd5

The other method, would be 19. Bxf6 gxf6 20. Bf3! which, of course, I completely missed...

Jul-16-07  ganstaman: Hmmm, Shredder may or may not have a point... Out of curiosity, what numerical evaluation does it give to 19. Bxf6? And what about 19. Bf3?

WannaBe: <ganstaman> Top 4 lines of Shredder's evaluation:

1. (5.10): 19.Bxf6 Qxf6 20.Rxd5 Qe7 21.Rb4 Rfe8 22.Rxc4 Rb8 23.Rc6 Rb1+ 24.Bf1 a5 25.Rxa5

2. (3.15): 19.Rb6 Re8 20.Bxf6 gxf6 21.Bg4 Ra8 22.Bf5 Re6 23.Qg3+ Kh8

3. (2.82): 19.Bf3 e4 20.Bxe4 Qa5 21.Bxf6 Bxe4 22.Be7 Bc6

4. (1.65): 19.Rb4 Qa5 20.Bxf6 gxf6 21.Qg3+ Kh8 22.Qh4 Rc6 23.Bg4 Kg7 24.Bd7 Rc5 25.Bf5 h6 26.Qg4+ Kh8 27.Qh3 Kg7 28.Qg3+

Jul-16-07  ganstaman: <3. (2.82): 19.Bf3 e4 20.Bxe4 Qa5 21.Bxf6 Bxe4 22.Be7 Bc6>

Oh, that's very sneaky of Shredder. Ok, so 19. Bf3 doesn't win a piece, only the exchange and a pawn. :(

WannaBe: Here is the really, really funny 'story'...

When I played 19. Bxf6, the only thing I was thinking was: "I have doubled pawns, I want black to have the same. Because if the queen retakes, the bishop drops..."

I really didn't look further, maybe I should have. Shows you how bad/sucky/shor-sighted player I am...

Ron: This is my 1,500 post!

I have to say that in my humble opinion this is the best chess related website. I was not a member from the beginning; yet in a few years I have seen and been part of its remarkable developments. One of the first game collections I created concerned games that have a queen sacrifice, which some members seemed to find interesting. I chose the games based on what I had known previously and also from the random game feature. This was before sacrifice explorer. Now we have to opporunity to watch and comment on great games of the past and present, to communicate with well known figures in the chess world, and to partcipate, and defeat, prominent players in correspondence chess. Fifteen years ago I did not even imagine this.

Aug-07-07  ganstaman: I'm too tired to figure this out or annotate, but I enjoyed myself. Enjoy and/or leave thoughts if you're not tired.
