CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Okay movie, couple of funny scenes... Not much to analyze about.

Aug-19-07  technical draw: <Wannabe> I wasn't talking about the movie. I had my hand in a certain position and a certain finger extended.
Aug-19-07  whiteshark: Uhm <TechBe> and <WannaDraw> together: thats means showtime - <Muppet Show <!>>
Aug-19-07  technical draw: <whiteshark> Glad you're enjoying the show. We'll be here every day until our parole is due.
Aug-19-07  whiteshark: <technical draw <Analyze this>> First I fed the anagraminator, than it's <Saintly haze>, which sounds like a name of a beer. But how to proceed ...? skoal!

Sounds like a satisfactory solution! ;)

<whiteshark: <...Muppet Show>>

Here you go:

Why do we always come here?
I guess we'll never know.
It's like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show...!

:p

Aug-26-07  contra: We come here...
coz at everything we suck.
Get the beer...
coz there are many ♕s to check.

Aug-29-07  ganstaman: Any thoughts on this one? There are several places where I'm still unsure of what's best.

Blitz on gameknot -- fill whatever holes your opponent gives you...

White: me
Black: not me

1. f4 c5 2. Nf3 d5 3. e3 a6 4. Be2 b5 5. b3 Bb7 6. Bb2 f6 (<I only really like this move if it can be followed by ...e7-e5, but that doesn't happen. Also, I feel 3...a6 is more justified by 4...Nc6, aiming again at ...e7-e5>) 7. O-O h5 8. d3 Nc6 9. Nbd2 h4 10. e4 d4 11. e5 b4 12. Nc4 a5 (<I'm not sure what this does. Maybe 12...e6 is better to prevent what happens next. In fact, maybe I like 12. e6 more than 12. Nc4>) 13. e6!

(<Keeps the black king stuck and will actually hamper black's kingside development for a while. If 13...Qd5, then 14. Nb6. If 13...g6, maybe 14. f5 gxf5 15. Nxh4 Qd5 16. Nxf5 and I think white still makes out ok, but this 13...g6 line should probably be investigated more.>) 13...f5 (<Blunders away 2 pawns due to mating threats on h5.>) 14. Nxd4 Nf6 15. Nxf5 Qd5 16. Bg4 (<A somewhat complicated defense of e6 that I'm not sure holds. There is a discovered check and fork setup, so maybe it is good?>) Nd4 17. Nfe3 Qd8 18. Ne5 (<I don't know what to do, so I centralize a knight behind a pawn.>) Qb6 19. Bxd4 cxd4 20. N3c4 Qc7 21. Bf5 Rg8 (<This confused me at first, but I now see it keeps the rook from getting forked by Nf7+. 21...Kd8 walks into that fork without my bishop check first.>) 22. Bg6+ Kd8 23. Nf7+ Kc8 24. a3 (<Almost at a loss for a plan, but I think I can open the queenside and infiltrate there. Otherwise, what can I do?>) Qc6 25. Qe2 h3

(<Eeek! Some dangerous stuff on g2. I could get my king tied up, but I don't think I see a mate.>) 26. Nfe5 Qd5 (<Ooops. He needed to play 26...Qxg2 27. Qxg2 and after I move my f1-rook, he can prevent the fork on b6. I'd still be up a pawn, but that pawn on c2 is useless. But with the bishop on f8 out of the game and the rook on g8 many tempo from action, I'd like to think I could have made something of it.>) 27. Nb6+ black resigns 1-0

Aug-30-07  xKinGKooLx: Don't drink Beer, drink Tea Bosboom-Lanchava instead. :)
Aug-30-07  Cactus: Unfortuneatly, Chessgames.com forgot to include in the database Beer's rivals at the chessboard, Chair and Phone.
Aug-30-07  Akavall: I got very good answers to some odd sounding question here before, so perhaps I should try my econometric question here.

In a time series regression, where all variables are in first differences to address the sationarity issue. Would that be OK to lag idependent variables, so that endogeneity problem is addressed or would too much information be lost?

Thanks.

Aug-30-07  ganstaman: <Akavall> Your post reminds me somewhat of this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8BsOYIgF...

Hope you find your answer!

Aug-30-07  Akavall: LoL

Well for somebody familiar with the field, my question should not sound so strange :). And this is of course what I am hoping for.

Aug-31-07  Akavall: That's too bad. I was one of few(probably) people who thought of him when heard "Michael Jackson".

Aug-31-07  ganstaman: Endgame question for anyone who likes them. I have the white pieces:

1. f4 e6 2. Nf3 b6 3. e4 Bb7 4. Nc3 d5 5. d3 dxe4 6. dxe4 Qxd1+ 7. Kxd1 Bb4 8. Bd2 Bxc3 9. Bxc3 f6 10. Bb5+ Bc6 11. Bxc6+ Nxc6 12. Ke2 O-O-O 13. Rad1 Nge7 14. g4 Rxd1 15. Rxd1 Rd8 16. Rxd8+ Kxd8 17. Ke3 Kd7 18. g5 fxg5 19. Nxg5 h6

Aug-31-07  whiteshark: <ganstaman: Any thoughts on this one?>

Why not Leningrad-Dutch Attack with <1.f4 c5 2.Nf3 d5 <3.g3>> ??

Aug-31-07  ganstaman: <whiteshark: <ganstaman: Any thoughts on this one?> Why not Leningrad-Dutch Attack with <1.f4 c5 2.Nf3 d5 <3.g3>> ??>

I started out with the classical Bird and Dutch. I was a bit unhappy with the way the Dutch was turning out, so I've moved to the Leningrad. But I'm still happy with the Bird the way it is. Maybe someday I'll make the move over to the Leningrad style, but for now, I like things the way they are.

You are Black. Now, pretend that as part of a vast Russian conspiracy, your Queen has been nailed to its square while you went to the bathroom. Go ahead and win the game anyway.

P.S. - I am not Bobby Fischer! ;p

Sep-05-07  whiteshark: <<Annie K.> <Russian conspiracy II>>

Imagine that dumberhead nailed your bishop instead of the queen. Go ahead....

P.S. - Sometimes I am hobby fisher! ;p
