CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Jul-08-11  Akavall: <JoergWalter> I see. Quite interesting, though unfortunate, so not even bottled beer is like in Germany. Maybe I should just go to Germany one day or at least visit Europe more often.
Jul-08-11  JoergWalter: <Akavall> in 1994 I spent one year in Paramus, NJ. That time there were a quite a few microbreweries in that area. Some had very good own brews. And I remember Samuel Adams was ok for an industry beer. Don't know whether this will change with INBEV controlling the market.
Jul-08-11  Akavall: <JoergWalter> Yeah. There are a lot of good microbreweries here, but generally they make good ales, sometimes very good, but I find their lagers unimpressive [don't know about New Jersey ones of course]. And my opinion about Sam Adams is about the same: good ales, very average lagers.
Jul-08-11  JoergWalter: Lager is challenging in the making. Microbreweries should only attempt it at winter time and budget a lot of money for the special yeast. this is a limiting factor for microbreweries.

Thanks, don't mind if I do!

Jan-21-12  Akavall: Have there been games where a pawn was promoted to rook or bishop because promoting to queen would be inferior?
Jan-21-12  King Death: < Akavall: Have there been games where a pawn was promoted to rook or bishop because promoting to queen would be inferior?>

There are people who know a lot more than I do about stuff like that and can probably cite a bunch of examples, but here's the most famous example of all though it isn't from a game:

Jan-21-12  Akavall: <King Death> Thanks. It is a cool position. And I believe that I saw a puzzle position where promoting to bishop was the only winning move/plan.

It would be still interesting to know whether under-promotions to rook and bishop actually happened in a real game.

I played thousands of blitz games and only under-promoted to knight once.
