Jul-11-05  THE pawn: what do you get anyway for beeing a premium member? A red ribbon written on it: member of chessgames! Yippi!?
Jul-27-05  Rocafella: <THE pawn> Can you not see the annoying boxes clearly pointing out the different reasons that you should join, when in fact you only have one reason for not joining! You are broke! :D

Joshka: <PoisonPawns> Yes, but I just don't get what the jokes are all about?? I even think someguy was "muzzled" on ICC for mentioning his name, maybe it's an "inside" joke between some ICC users, but unless the rest of the membership are let in on the mystery, seems kind of childish to try to make jokes about a player rated almost 2400.
Nov-04-05  Poisonpawns: I am waiting for this mans book to come out!

  LIFE Master AJ: Two questions:

# 1.) Does Emory ever read this page?

# 2.) Does he have the score of the game that we played at Montgomery, AL (1980?) - "Queen of Hearts" - in his collection???

WannaBe: There are a lot of good knowledge-able members here, but when you read their bio, it's empty. So who knows... Maybe one of them could be Mr. Tate. =)

Great, now I can't "Queen of Hearts" song out of my head. It's stuck.... Help me!!!!!!!

LIFE Master AJ: Sorry, but that was the actual name of the event - usually played over the Valentine's (day) weekend ... or the weekend that it fell closest to.

Thanks for clarify (sp??) that AJ.

Sneaky: People on ICC shout about the greatness of Tate because <a> he really is a strong player, and when he's playing, he is a hoot to watch, and <b> it's a harmless inside joke where newcomers are saying "Huh? Who is Tate?" while others run around talking about Tate like he's their best buddy. When I was in college a Frat house played a similar prank--there was a certain semi-fictitious character named "Wilson" who's name was often invoked, but never explained. (That should give you some idea of the level of maturity of this gag.)

LIFE Master AJ: YW Come to think of it, it was an unusual name for a chess tournament ... but I never really thought about it before now.

BTW, this was one of the FIRST (major) five-round swisses I ever won. I was rated low "Class A," and after drawing a "B" player in a very close game, I told my friend that the tournament was over for me. I then won four straight games ... Emory Tate, Ben Sides, J. Scott Pfeiffer, and then Kerry Leahy. (Clear first.) In attendance was a young Stuart Rachels, who played, but was a year or two away from becoming a really strong player. (Stuart would later go on to become a 2400+ terror, one of the youngest masters ever ... up until that point in chess history. Eventually Stuart became U.S. Junior Champion and then tied for first in the U.S. Championship. Sadly, I don't think he even plays chess today.)

LIFE Master AJ: BTW, Emory Tate is a very fine player. I used to watch his games all the time on ICC.

I have also seen him compete - and defeat titled players - in events like The NY Open and The World Open.

Nov-13-05  Averageguy: <LMAJ><I looked at it ... looks like Tate lost all of them.> No he didn't.
Feb-27-06  Fan of Leko: Tate will be playing in the U.S. Championship starting on Thursday. The last guy I would want to play if I was a GM.
Feb-27-06  whiskeyrebel: yeah...I'll be watching his games for sure. I hope he ruins a few titled players days.
Mar-01-06  Mating Net: Go get 'em Emory! Let's see a couple of GM scalps on the wall
Mar-01-06  MaxxLange: God bless Yasser Seirawen for starting af4c, saving the US championship, and promoting chess by expanding it to more players. The traditional closed round robin is of course correct for a national championship, but US chess needs new ideas. Tate, for example, qualified by placing first (tied) at the US Chess Congress in Philly. So the winners of major events are seeded as well as the top rated seeds and the special invites to juniors, etc.

WannaBe: Mr. Tate, I'll be down Saturday to visit the tournament Saturday 4th March. I'm gonna enjoy the weather (hopefully, suppose to rain Thursday and/or Friday.) and catch some good chess action!!

OK, don't know a thing about him, but now I'm his #1 fan.
