  Benzol: Jaan Ehlvest
Born 14th October 1962
Awarded the IM title in 1982 he was also European junior champion in 1982-83.
Dec-28-04  admiralnemo: For you New Yorkers out there, and anyone else who appreciates it: If memory serves , Ehlvest is the Marshall Chess Club's champion for the past couple years...
Apr-30-05  WorldChampeen: "Jaan Ehlvest, Estonia's strongest player since the legendary Paul Keres, has lived through some very interesting times." - Washington Times, http://washingtontimes.com/entertai...

" In his unpretentious new autobiography, "The Story of a Chess Player" - He has written a book, 40 annotated games vs. the likes of Kramnik, Spassky, Anand, etc.

So if the link does not work, check the Washington Times.

One last quote from the story:

""The Story of a Chess Player" is most intriguing when the author describes the struggles and rewards of being a solid pro in a game he loves. Using the efficient Q&A format employed by Mikhail Tal in his classic autobiography, Ehlvest gives an inside look at the Soviet chess system in its last days, including a kindly profile of former world champion Mikhail Botvinnik and generous portraits of rivals such as Valery Salov, Alex Wojtkiewicz and Kasparov. "

May-22-05  WorldChampeen: Ehlvest seems to be doing well at the HB Global Chess Challenge, despite his round 5 lost; I'm glad it didn't leave him all shook up.

Joshka: According to ICC Jan is going to play a Man vs Machine match against a computer July 6-9, believe it's the program Zappa. One classical game per day starting at 11am ICC time. Will <chessgames.com> be covering?

Joshka: How strong is this program? What is it's record against Hydra?
Jul-06-05  csmath: Has no record against Hydra. I played 5 games against Zappa and I beat it twice and had 3 draws. It is fairly strong, not as strong as Hydra but pretty good for the hardware which is dual Opteron 246. It does not have weaknesses in general but lacks better opening book. Today Elhvest has chosen rather sharp opening and the result of course is as expected. ;-))
Jul-07-05  csmath: This is the game Ehlvest lost today to Zappa. Zappa generated serious attack with knight sacrifice and Ehlvest actually defended pretty good. Nevertheless he started to play passively (watch kings moves) and was quickly punished. Classical time controls.

Joshka: <csmath> You've won against Zappa? Are you GM strength? From my database is 12.Rd1 a novelty?
Jul-07-05  csmath: <<Are you GM strength?>>

Nope, but my machine is. ;-))
Joshka, machines are nowadays so much stronger than GMs. I cannot believe that people still do not believe this. ;-))

Jul-07-05  csmath: During the game, we were analising (DIEP, Spacechess, BountyHunter etc) and we all saw a saving move for Ehlvest 48. ... Qc3! but Ehlvest was so determined to exchange the queens that he stopped playing anything active and allowed the white knight to reach the attack range.

Today at 11 AM there is a game #2, we'll see if Ehlvest can do something more with white pieces.

Jul-07-05  aragorn69: Impressive positional sacrifice by the computer (16.Nxb5). The result is not at all clear (say, 17 moves later, e.g.) and yet he plays it...
Jul-07-05  aragorn69: Ehlvest's defense (23.-Bxa6!! and 26.-Bxb4!) is very clever indeed and might have out of the comp's horizon.
Jul-07-05  Legend: The game can be played over here:

http://www.maleliit.ee/modules.php?...

Jul-07-05  csmath: Second game drawn as a GM draw. So sad when programmers decide the draw instead of program. Pathetic.
Jul-08-05  SnoopDogg: A miniature if playchess.com is correct today, and no Zappa did not come out on the winning side! (although I think the score is a mistake since it is all book maybe the monster just got unplugged or something)

Jul-08-05  azaris: <A miniature if playchess.com is correct today> They're not.
Jul-08-05  csmath: Well, it is a short game. Ehlvest played inferior opening then got lost in the tactical battle and though Zappa did not play well at all, it was quite enough to smash the GM. Not an impressive game by any standards:

Jul-09-05  azaris: Ehlvest seems to have gotten a break today as the computer inexplicably drops a pawn in the endgame.
Jul-09-05  csmath: Yes, strange move 37. ... Nc5+? leads to immediate simplification and Elhvest saves the game. All in all, Ehlvest had absolutely no chances in the match, he survived two games with whites and get crushed in two games with black. He established no countergame in any of the games. Clear dominance by computer program.

Jan-03-06  WMD: <'You are not married yet. What kind of woman are you looking for?'

'I do not know why, but I am very fond of blond women. The personality does not matter much-I think I can handle any kind; but it is best if the woman is clever. She must also have the qualities real women from the past had. I am not a nobleman, but probably I would like a noble, stylish woman for a wife-but I can live without one also.'

'Would you marry someone from the chess world?'

'The idea of having a "chess family" is not so good. Competitive chess, like any other competitive sport, is not for women because it is very stressful and harmful to your health. I do not believe that any caring man should want that his sweetheart gets hurt.'

'Which country has the most beautiful women?'

'I have been asked this question many times and my answer always changes. My first answer was Spain, Iceland, and Russia-I cannot remember the order. On the TV, the Italian women are gorgeous, and having been in the Ukraine I must say that they for sure qualify to the "finals". ..

As you get older, you no longer chase after the fairer sex with your tongue hanging out-there are so many of them. Everywhere there are beautiful women; one has to pick what one wants.'>
