Dec-05-07 | | Shams: <I know that English must be a foreign language for Jonathan Rowson, but still, "Computers have speeded up"? (check his column in NiC 2007/5)> I'm sure GM Rowson, a native-born Scot, would be unhappy to consider himself an ESL speaker. :) For my money, "speeded up" sounds worse than it is. "Sped up" connotes velocity, which is a different kind of speed than CPU cycles. Who knows. I know google is perhaps too democratic an arbiter for such things, but "speeded up" returns 1.09 million pages, and "sped up" 1.2 million. Pretty close. :) |
Dec-05-07 | | GreenArrow: <cu8sfan> 'Speeded up' is correct, but 'speed' is an irregular verb and 'sped up' is also acceptable |
Dec-11-07 | | Brown: Rowson recently spoke in Scotland re: chess in education. As is his style, others described his lecture as more thought-provoking then conclusive. Apparently he focused on meaning-making in chess, and how this natural result of any endeavor upon which one concentrates helps children progress cognitively. At least that's how I read it, after reading Chess for Zebras and the article in this months Chess Life. |
Jul-06-08 | | whiskeyrebel: I'm just finishing off "Chess for Zebras" and am very impressed. It's loaded with fresh advice. There's also plenty of insight given as to what goes through the minds of several GM's before, during and after OTB play. I've had a bad habit of rushing to cash in on positional advantages rather than maintaining the tension. Rowson's philosophical take on this had me nodding my head like mad. I've been reading a library copy, but I intend to buy one and reread it in six months or so. |
Jul-29-08 | | Everett: Really enjoyed his Chess for Zebras as well. He is definitely on the cerebral side of things when talking about chess, and I appreciate this difference he has with other writers. |
Jul-30-08 | | whiskeyrebel: Everett, I think Rowson has ruined some other chess writers for me. His annotated games are loaded with so much personal insight it's hard to go back to less titillating works without storylines. |
Jul-30-08 | | GeauxCool: <whiskyrebel/Everett> In that book <CfZ> he mentions a position in Gdonski-Arkell, Neum 2000. The position is this one:

Does he provide the entire game? I can't seem to locate it at <CG>. |

Jul-30-08 | | GeauxCool: GM Gdanski |
Jul-31-08 | | whiskeyrebel: Geauxcool, sorry. I read a university library copy that's been returned so I can't look it up. Hopefully Everett can help. |
Jul-31-08 | | protean: <GeauxCool><Does he provide the entire game?> No, I'm afraid he doesn't. |

Nov-07-08
 | | GrahamClayton: I found it interesting that Rowson did not receive an invitation to compete in the 2008 British championship, despite winning a hat-trick of British titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Either the ECF did not have the funds to give a financial incentive to Rowson, or they wanted the tournament to be the "English Championship". |
Nov-07-08 | | hrvyklly: <Brown: ... How is the one on the Grunfeld?> Possibly the best book on any opening I've ever read - highly recommended. |
Nov-07-08 | | hrvyklly: <whiskeyrebel: Everett, I think Rowson has ruined some other chess writers for me. His annotated games are loaded with so much personal insight it's hard to go back to less titillating works without storylines.> Me too, 'normal' annotations are just too bland and dry in comparison. |
Mar-04-09 | | whiskeyrebel: I finally picked up a copy of the "Seven Deadly Chess Sins". It's a great read so far, very unique and well written. |
Apr-18-09 | | wordfunph: I've got a book "The 7 Deadly Sins" written by GM Jonathan Rowson, a good read! Happy Birthday GM Rowson.. |
Apr-18-10 | | kurtrichards: One sin is more than enough already and yet there are six others. :-) Great book Jonathan. Happy Birthday! |
Apr-18-10 | | wordfunph: nice one <kurt>.. :-0 happy 33rd birthday Jonathan! |
Apr-18-10 | | whiteshark: Now, aren't we all born sinners in chess???
congrats for |lv-up| |
Apr-18-10 | | SetNoEscapeOn: <wordfunph: I've got a book "The 7 Deadly Sins" written by GM Jonathan Rowson, a good read!> Definitely one of my favorite chess books. Few players discuss their thoughts as thoroughly and openly as Rowson. |
Apr-19-10 | | ycbaywtb: the thing i never understand about these GM's that reach 2600 or so is so many have so few games played he has like 400 in 17 years, barely 20 a year
if i was this good in chess i'd play all the time |
May-14-10 | | wordfunph: "Gambit publications were generous at the beginning, patient in the middle and persistent at the end." GM Jonathan Rowson
(on his book Chess for Zebras) |

Jun-08-10
 | | GrahamClayton: Rowson calls a passed d-pawn a "Delroy". Does he say how he created this name? |
Nov-09-11 | | wordfunph: "My bookshelves now have so many books with 'secrets' in the title that I fear
they might start whispering to each other."
- GM Jonathan Rowson |
Nov-21-11 | | Albertan: Jonathan Rowson now his his Doctorate degree and leads leads the RSA Social Brain project. "After degrees from Oxford and Harvard, his Doctoral research was an examination of the concept of wisdom, including a detailed analysis of the challenge of overcoming the psycho-social constraints that prevent people becoming 'wiser', similar to what the RSA terms the 'social aspiration gap'." The Homepagpe of the RSA project is:
http://www.thersa.org/ I hope the administrators of Chessgame will include this update concerning Dr. and GM Rowson. I wonder how many people in the World have a doctorate degree in some academic field (or Medical field) and are also a Chess Grandmaster? I know that Robert Hubner also holds both distinctions. Hubner is a papyrologist (an expert in Egyptian hieroglyphics). |
Nov-21-11 | | Albertan: I saw GM Rowson win this game at the 2000 Canadian Open in Edmonton,Alberta: P Wells vs J Rowson, 2000
I talked with him and I also had him autograph my copy of his book, "Understanding the Grunfeld (1998). Gambit Publications." |
