Aug-26-05  teme: This is a very good young player from Albania.

tpstar: <teme> Nice to meet you. Just so you understand, that song is about child abuse, but any joke or reference wasn't meant in any mean fashion regarding your compatriot. Our group is very clever, plus the name Luca is less common in the states. In fact, that's one of the themes of the song = a boy named Luka.
Aug-27-05  teme: Nice to meet you too, I had no idea that was about child abuse, I didnt know it was a song ethir.
Aug-27-05  BishopofBlunder: That's why I put (VOR) after it. It is an acronym for Very Obscure Reference. Making obscure references is one of my (few) talents. My mind is full of useless knowledge. :)

And yes, I was not trying to disparage Mr. Shytaj.

Aug-28-05  teme: Oh ok I didn't know what VOR was.
Aug-28-05  teme: Btw his name is not pronounced Luka.
Nov-27-08  Karpova: He played for Italy during the Dresden Olympiad (he still played for Albania at Turin 2006) and for the Italian Federation in general.

Carlo Shytaj - his brother?

Nov-27-08  Prugno: <Karpova> Luca was forced to represent Albania in the past because he was granted Italian citizenship only last year, although he has been living in this country (in Bari) for about 15 years. Soon he will also be playing in his first Italian Championship.

He is currently based in Rome, where he got his degree in biology just before the Olympiad started (which might explain his solid but not exceptional performance in Dresden). A great talent in both chess and science, as well as a very pleasant person.

And yes, Carlo Shytaj is his older brother, a strong candidate-master level player.

Nov-27-08  Karpova: Thanks for the information, <Prugno>!

Dec-29-08  whiteshark: International Master from Bari of Albanian origin. Shytaj started to play chess at the age of 4 learning from his father and his brother. At 16 he graduates National Master. In 2003 he becomes Albanian national champion. In 2005 achieves the title of International Master thanks to the norms gained in the tournaments of Bratto (2004), Verona and Montecatini (2005). He played both Olympiads of Calvià (2004) and Turin (2006) with his home country National team. He closed this year's Italian Team Championship in second place with the team Salentina-Confindustria from Lecce. In 2008 he became Italian citizen, and played the recent Olympiad in Dresden with the Italian National Team, closing in a good 41st place (Italy's initial rank was 44th ). This is his second participation in Reggio Emilia after the excellent 4th place (joint with Romanishin) obtained in the 49th edition.

He got off lightly. Recall that Wesley So had to endure representing the Philippines for 18 years.

Tabanus: Wesley So is <still representing> the Philippines, as a Philippine citizen and a Filipino by heart. He changed to US chess fededation to get better matching. I'm married to a Filipina, and sorry to say it Miss, but unless you apologize, you'll get no more help from me.

Jun-03-20  wordfunph: "It is likely that all crowded chess tournaments will have to be postponed until early or mid-2021. Smaller events with a few players and reasonable safety measures may be held perhaps as early as the second half of this year."
