OLIVER BARBOSA
(born Sep-29-1986, 38 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

IM (2008); GM (2011).

Oliver Barbosa was born in Pasig City, Manila. He was the 1997 Shell Philippines National Youth Grand Finals Champion. In 2004 he reached the Philippines National semi-finals. The same year he was both the Philippines national under-18 Champion, and the Philippines National Junior Champion. In 2006, he came equal third behind Wesley So and Ronald Dableo at the 2nd Prospero Pichay Cup in Manila. Later that year he was a member of the successful Philippines team that defeated Myanmar in a team contest, his personal contribution being to score 8/12 to assist a clean sweep of all boards. Towards the end of 2010, he competed in the Penang Heritage City Open International Chess Tournament where he came equal first alongside Oliver Dimakiling with 7.5/9. He continued his good form immediately afterwards in the Asean Open Championships 2010 in Singapore, where he again came equal first, this time with Georgian GM Zurab Alekseyevich Azmaiparashvili, with a score of 6.5/9, drawing his individual game with the co-leader.

2011 started off with a successful result in the Moscow Open 2011 E, where he came equal second with 7.5/9, half a point behind the winner Vladimir Belous, losing only to Alexander Beliavsky, but defeating his other two GM opponents, namely Pavel Mikhailovich Kotsur from Kazakhstan and Russia's Sergey Volkov. In March he came =2nd at the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 1 behind Dzhurabek Khamrakulov and then came equal first in the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 2, also played in March. He scored 5/9 - and his first GM norm - at the 10th Asian Individual Championship (2011) in May, and in July he took outright first at the Campomanes Memorial Yangon International Open 2011 in Myanmar, with 7.5/9. Also in July he scored 8/13 to place =2nd with veteran GM Eugenio Torre, half a point behind prodigy GM Wesley So in the National Championships played in Manila, securing his second GM norm. His 3rd GM norm came at the Raja Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters in Kuala Lumpur in September. As his rating is already over 2500, his GM title was ratified by FIDE at its Congress in later October 2011.

2012 has seen him place a splendid 5th with 6/9 at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012), qualifying him for participation in the 2013 World Cup and win the Orissa GM Open held in Bhuvaneshwar in India with 8.5/10. He also played on board 2 for the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad (2012) held in Istanbul, scoring 7/10 with a TPR of 2668 and placed =1st at the Bangkok Chess Club Open 2013, scoring 7/9. He also placed 2nd at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship with 6.5/9. He won the 2013 Battle of Grandmasters with 10/13 and won the silver medal representing Tagatay on board 2 at the Asian Cities Championship 2013, helping his city team to the gold medal. In March 2014, he won the 19th International Grandmaster Open in Kolkata with 7.5/10 and in April was =1st alongside Francisco Vallejo Pons.

In the first round of the World Cup (2013), he lost in the first round to Le Quang Liem, the loss eliminating him from the contest.

Barbosa was a silver medalist of the 2005 SEA games. In 2003 he coached the Taytay team.

May-12-11  pinoymaster77: Good AM,

I can say at least 2nd GM norm this year (and can bet in chessbookie too he he), and there's at least the ASEAN Zonals, Pichay Cup here.

For BOGM, can earn GM norm here(?), kasi puro Pinoys... and maybe send him also to Campo Cup in Myanmar...

May-15-11  pinoymaster77: Next week na ASEAN Zonals, next stop of GM Candidate Olie Barbosa...
May-19-11  pinoymaster77: Makikibalita kami sa '2nd leg' ng LWUA tune-ups, get revved up.

Mukhang madami ring Philippine masters balak maglaro sa Zonals!

May-20-11  RuyLupit: IM Barbosa aims for 2nd GM norm in Asian Zonals. Ayos, pinoy masters back in action!
May-22-11  pinoymaster77: Yup, bukas na opening and rd1... and malamang entry sa chess-results.com
Jun-07-11  geniokov: Hope IM Barbosa will get another GM Norm here,as well as our future generations like Datu and Garcia.
Jun-07-11  pinoymaster77: Naka-gain sa latest rounds, and reviewing it only 1 loss to Indon IM Taufik. Pero mababa TPR < 2500 and below his ELO. Not sure kung aabot based on other criteria, per FIDE handbook?

Saka only 2 GMs faced, Mark pa sa final rd...

Jun-09-11  pinoymaster77: IM Barb,

Ganyan talaga chess, ups and downs.

Even though sa last tourneys na eto dito eh di naka norm and malamang ELO loss pa, eh nakarating ka na sa 2500 level. You just need the 2 more GM norms and matic na!

Hope mapadala ka sa Campo Cup, and look forward to your playing in BOGM...pati si IM Garma may asim pa rin...

Jul-04-11  pinoymaster77: Congratulations to IM Oliver Barbosa for winning the AFPI rapid event and as per NCFP article clinching a slot in the SEA Games rapid team :

http://www.ncfphilippines.org/ncfp/...

Jul-05-11  RuyLupit: Congrats IM Barbosa, another feather in your cap.
Jul-07-11  pinoymaster77: Indeed nasa Campo Memorial nga, pero isa lang GM from Myanmar and si IM Barbosa pa top seeded...

http://pinoychess.informe.com/forum...

Need to be on top of this tourney in order not to lose on ELO...

Sana sa BOGM kung matuloy ay makakuha ng 2nd GM norm...

Jul-08-11  pinoymaster77: Here's the Inquirer article. Also got sms yesterday that IMs Barbosa & Bitoon drew their rd3 games for 3.5/4, while FM Turqueza won for 3/4.

IMs Bitoon and Barbosa tallied perfect scores of 3.0 points to share the overall lead in the tough nine-round competition organized by the Myanmar Chess Federation and the Myanmar Sports and Physical Education Department.

Also with three points each are IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam, IM Atanhu Lahiri of India and IM Shen Siyuan of China. The tournament champion will win $3,000.

Jul-11-11  321ycnay: Kamusta mga kabarangay!

Tagal akong nawala... since third week of May pa, nagbago kasi ang mundo kong ginagalaguran.

Ngayon lang kasi ako nakapag-log in eh! Mahabang panahon na talaga... dami nang napalampas.
Jul-12-11  RuyLupit: Congrats IM Barbosa sa pagkapanalo mo sa Yangon Campo Memorial Cup. Sana tuloy-tuloy na ang tagumpay mo. Malaki din yung premyo, US $3K.
