Mar-23-06  Jim Bartle: "...street-hard nerdy mafia chess gangsters!" I'm trying to form an image of this in my mind.

(I wouldn't want to live with a woman nicknamed "the Shuttle."Doesn't sound good.)

Mar-23-06  EmperorAtahualpa: "How I escaped from jail in Afghanistan": http://www.samsloan.com/escape.htm

This sounds like perfect material for a movie!!

Mar-23-06  Jim Bartle: Maybe James Spader, or Adam Sandler (?), is available for the leading role.

Mar-23-06  Jim Bartle: "How I escaped from jail in Afghanistan"

He could have driven to Afghanistan and back in the time it takes to read that story.

offramp: He has apparently been elected onto the Executive Board of the USCF. 1st Hough, 2nd Sloan, 3rd Goodall, is what I heard. Well done, Sam.
Jul-21-06  Caissanist: Susan Polgar on Sloan's election: http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/200....

It will be, er, interesting to see his influence on USCF governance.

Jul-21-06  MaxxLange: I have let my USCF expire for about 3 years now, and haven't been following events. So, maybe I have missed some positive results from the new USCF administration. When I left, my fee was going up every year, they failed to rate all the tournaments I played in, and a series of financial catastophes (like raiding the Life Members fund) came to light. There have been many, many, other serious problems with USCF in the last 10 years, that is simply one example.

From my experience, I think voters may have simply picked Sloan as a protest vote. Who knows, maybe it will lead to some good for the organization.

Jul-21-06  JustAFish: Holey, moley. What a strange turn of a events. Based soley on the material on his website, it appears Sloan is a habitual confabulator, an overt sexist who has a strange fascination with publicizing his somewhat less than chaste interest in pre-teen girls, and who holds views only slightly less paranoid than those of Bobby Fischer.

This, once again, is based on a reading of his website.

I suppose what happened here was that Sloan had the most name recognition.

I, incidentally, voted for Grant Perks, current president of the Ohio Chess Association, and a modest, organized, intelligent, all-around regular guy who has kept Ohio Chess chugging along for years.

Jul-21-06  percyblakeney: <an overt sexist who has a strange fascination with publicizing his somewhat less than chaste interest in pre-teen girls>

Yes, it is a bit surprising that Sloan was so supported in spite of his open and detailed accounts of his numerous contacts with very young prostitutes in third world countries...

Jul-21-06  Caissanist: Of course it's a protest vote, but the USCF is toast anyway. Pretty much everything that they do that is still worth doing could now be done on a couple of high-end PCs in a corner of Bill Goichberg's apartment. Probably that's what will happen, after they exhaust their reserves and file for bankruptcy in a few years.
Jul-21-06  Dick Brain: I understand Sam was president of a club called the Sexual Freedom League while he was a student at UC Berkeley and organized a large number of orgies.

This proves he at least thinks exactly like the typical chess player!

Jul-30-06  Caissanist: Susan Polgar does not want to let this slide, she is publicly lobbying to have Sloan's election voided by the delegates.

Eric Schiller: Anyone who knowws Sam, as I have for decades, knowss this is an outrageous claim. Sam is one of the most eccentric chessplayers, but he is more interested in procreation to spread his DNA than in recreation, and has had many wives and children, all of whom he loves dearly. Sam has flaws, but in my experience this is not something he would ever do. I have often criticized him harshly but would demand clear corroberated evidence for such a serious charge. Most of his critics I have checked with feel the same. I suspect Susan is being encouraged to attack Sam for mere chess political reasons.
Jul-30-06  acirce: Who takes Susan Polgar seriously anyway?
Jul-30-06  mack: <Who takes Susan Polgar seriously anyway?>

I most certainly do not, for a start.

< Sam is one of the most eccentric chessplayers, but he is more interested in procreation to spread his DNA than in recreation, and has had many wives and children, all of whom he loves dearly.>

Oh God, we've not got another Waco or Jonestown on our hands, have we?

Jul-30-06  Prugno: I haven't looked into the sexual charges against this man and don't intend to do so, but I definitely wouldn't like to befriend (much less vote for) somebody who goes round publicly announcing Peter Leko's death in a car accident while the GM was in fact peacefully sleeping in his bed.
Jul-30-06  MaxxLange: Let's void his election and replace him with IM Timothy Taylor!
Jul-30-06  noendgame: <acirce: Who takes Susan Polgar seriously anyway?> What do you have against Susan Polgar?
Jul-30-06  ughaibu: She's so biased, she probably walks on one leg.

WannaBe: <ughaibu> I've seen her, and talked to Ms. Polgar, I can testify that she has both of her legs. =)
Jul-30-06  ughaibu: Wannabe: I expect you have both your hands but only use one when drinking.
Jul-31-06  bartonlaos: You can see how close their families were, and how Sloan has supported the Polgars throughout the years by multiple references listed on these pages.

By the way, I tried to post these same photographs on Susan's blog, but she had them deleted!!!

What is she trying to hide?
