  cu8sfan: I met him at the Lichthof Chess Champions (2006). He's a really likeable man. Very approachable and always joking. He used to do chess on TV together with Helmut Pfleger.
Jan-12-07  diagonal: yeah, Vlastimil Hort is a nice fellow with his own sense of humour and did / does much for the popularization of chess on German and Swiss (german) television - and also a very busy man OTB!

In the chessgames statistics with the players have the most games in database he is ranked 8th (behind Korchnoi, Timman, Karpov, Gligoric, Tal, Smyslov and Portisch), in the new chessbase megadatabase 2007 he is even on position 6 of all time with already more than 3'000 games, not to mention lots of his exhibitions & (blind) simuls, cp. the first posting of <Honza Cervenka> in this (maybe - so far - too shorten) thread. Well, enough statistical rhubarb, just two further remarks:

As already pointed out by <Gypsy> earlier, Hort played on board 4 for the "Rest of the World" against "USSR", beating individually his opponent Polugaevsky with 2.5 to 1.5. in this famous match in 1970 at Belgrade.

On the english wikipedia site there are some interesting details about his Candidate match (quarterfinal) versus Spassky in 1977, lost in extremis. Hort is characterized as a truly fair sportsman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlasti...

Jan-12-07  diagonal: ... and of course: happy birthday, Vlastimil Hort!
Jun-29-07  Edwin Meyer: ChessVibes video interview Vlastimil Hort http://www.chessvibes.com/?p=986&lp...
Feb-18-08  percyblakeney: I just read a short summary of an old Hort article from the beginning of the 1970's. He writes that he is disappointed in the younger players and that the slightly older players are more of true gentlemen. Among them he mentions Keres, Smyslov, Korchnoi and Gligoric.

Hort means that it's a torture to compete with especially opponents like Mecking and Browne. According to Hort Mecking tries to disturb his opponents in various ways when he has little time left on the clock, while Browne is doing his best to follow Fischer's example when it comes to eccentricities.

Hort claims that he lost a game against Browne after the latter was abusing Arbiter, clock and opponent for several minutes while Hort tried to make his moves, and ended up hanging a piece.

(Tidskrift för Schack 1:1972).

Mar-09-08  wolfmaster: Is this guy's name pronounced as it looks like(Hohrt), or is it Hoort, Hurt, Hairt, etc.?
Mar-09-08  Gypsy: 'Hoard', exept with the nonsounding 't' instead of the sounding 'd' at the end, comes reasonably close.
Jun-01-08  whiteshark: Hort's geriatric hints:

<I believe that Chess possesses a magic that is also a help in advanced age. A rheumatic knee is forgotten during a game of Chess and other events can seem quite unimportant in comparison with a catastrophe on the chessboard>

:D

Aug-21-08  myschkin: . . .

Hmmm... in that case it sounds like "whore", doesn't it? I think I'll keep calling him "HoarT", with a big T at the end!

Jan-12-09  seaotter: The book "The BEST Move," Hort & Jansa should be on everyone's BEST list,... Real hard book,... I think it is no longer in print in english,... I was able to get a German copy from an old East German book dealer,... Really a classic,... Unfortunately, I am after 1 year still only on problem 28,.. The problems are really humbling and it is more fun to study openings or Dworetski (thats sick isn't it,... i.e. more fun then Dworetski I mean)....

Maybe this year I will get past problem 100.

Kind regards to Mr. Hort

Apr-05-09  Dredge Rivers: Czech, please! :)

First. Go right ahead with your <HoarT>, it will be about right.

Second. By 'non-sounding', I did not mean 'silent'. Instead, I was referring to a pronunciation based classification of consonants: sounding = (d,v,...), non-sounding = (t,f,...).

In Czech, despite being a generally a phonetic language, non-accented 'sounding' consonants at the end of the words are pronounced as if they were their 'non-sounding' siblings:

d -> t
v -> f
etc

Thus the nominative of the names spelled as 'Hort' and 'Hord' would be pronounced about the same, even though their other cases (e.g., vocative) would generally differ.

Really the hardest problem book I've ever seen- anyone sub expert level should not even try. IF you love a challenge pick up this book.

I am watching Hort's Chessbase DVD Facing the World Champions right now. Will post a review after I'm finished.

Jul-10-09  ToTheDeath: I finished Hort's Chessbase DVD "Facing the World Champions". Very entertaining stories, the games themselves are not so great, but Hort is nonetheless interesting to listen to as he describes how he knew the champions: playing blitz with Fischer and Najdorf until 6 am (with Najdorf not winning a game from Bobby), seeing Karpov's political machinations and his tears over Brezhnev's death, Botvinnik refusing to shake his hand before their game.

This is essentially a chess memoir and if you are a fan of Hort or just want to hear some stories about the world champions by a 20th century chess professional you will enjoy this DVD.
