May-18-12  technical draw: I'm in 7th place! From the bottom that is. This has been a terrible leg for me. I'm now co-habitating with the dregs of society. I hear that six ton Bubba is down here, I better be careful.
May-18-12  hms123: <TD> These are my remaining bets. Do you think I have a chance to move up?

Chessgames Bookie: First of all apologies for not settling the US Championship bets yesterday. We just payed them off.

<MarkFinan> I'm not 100% sure what happened but there is a known bug with Chessbookie that involves players who work their way back to precisely 1000 chessbucks. In other words, if you happened to have exactly 1000 yesterday you might have been temporarily omitted from the list. Don't worry though, you were never excluded from the game in any sense.

I'm not sure if that explains your situation but you are indeed on the list right now, considerably lower down, with -499.

May-20-12  MarkFinan: Lol... Cheers chessbookie, I wish I hadn't asked now though, I had no Idea I was doing so badly!

Anyway, you're back and visible In my forum now, so thank you :)

Chessgames Bookie: It isn't often when bets like World Championship Rd 8: OPENING become so darned complicated, but the terms and conditions do read <The Chessgames software will make the final determination of the type of opening played.> and therefore I feel obligated to explain what this determination was.

Note this early position in Anand vs Gelfand, 2012

click for larger view

Because of this setup, the software identified it as "Indian Game: Anti-Grünfeld. Alekhine Variation", however it also provided the closest ECO to that line which is Neo-Grunfeld Defense (D70). So, somewhat self-contradicting, the software declared that it's both an anti-Grunfeld and a neo-Grunfeld.

And so the winner will be "Grunfeld/Neo-Grunfeld".

Some complex arguments could be made that it's really a KID by transposition, and perhaps they are right, but the fine-print reads "the software is the final arbiter" so that's how we'll stick wth it. Besides what do I know about all this chess stuff? I wish I just ran the numbers-racket like my pappy always wanted me to.

May-21-12  brankat: <Chessgames Bookie> The opening, aside from what the "fine print", which should be re-fined, says in regards to software (also in a need of re-fining), has at least as many elements of Benoni as of (Neo)-Gruenfeld. So it could have easily passed as "Other" (odds 30-1).

But, more than anything, the line was certainly closer to KID than to anything else (61-1 odds). Indeed, initially, and briefly, the game was listed as KID in the Database. So, I went (happily) to the betting page to cash the ticket, only to find it is to be discarded. By the time I got back to the Match page the designation was changed to "Indian: Anti-Gruenfeld...". really meaning, again: "Other".

Can't but wonder how many bettors experienced the same disappointment and frustration.

Since the software in question doesn't have a capacity to think, and in order to avoid this type of a situation in the future, which would inevitably happen, I suggest that "OPENING" kind of a Wager be discontinued.

Thank You.

Chessgames Bookie: <brankat> I appreciate your input on this and as you pointed out, to make matters even more confusing, opening designation at Chessgames is really a two-step process. The more superficial step takes place automatically during a live game then the "official" designation happens afterwards. In this case it was superficially designated a KID then later refined to be a Neo-Grunfeld.

In light of this event we may be more strongly inclined to bets of the simpler nature, 'First move' or even 'First two moves', to avoid any possible dispute.

Thanks.

Chessgames Bookie: And with that in mind, World Championship Rd 9: FIRST MOVE.
May-21-12  Golden Executive:

<<Can't but wonder how many bettors experienced the same disappointment and frustration.>

World Championship Rd 8: OPENING : King's Indian Defense [discard ticket] 25 LOSE 61:1 62.21 -- May-21-12>

That means 1,555 chessbucks :(

<Indeed, initially, and briefly, the game was listed as KID in the Database.>

Yep, at that moment I downloaded the PGN File with this reading:

ECO 60: King´s Indian: Unusual lines and Fianchetto Variation without Nc3

May-21-12  technical draw: I bet on the KID and shudda won $3,114 cbs. I am depressed.
May-21-12  Golden Executive:

Are you KIDding ?

En español: "chamaqueando"? ;)

May-21-12  technical draw: <GE> No, no kidding. I also cudda won $1,183 on the OTHER bet. Instead I lose $200 and fall deeper into the quagmire.
May-21-12  Golden Executive:

<TD> Where did you lose the other 115 chessbucks?

May-21-12  technical draw: <GE> I'm not sure. I bet $200 on the openings and maybe some other smaller bets. But the KID would have put me on the leader board. Now I'm more depressed and don't feel like betting anymore.
May-22-12  wordfunph: i donated my 1,150 chessbucks to all Vishy bettors :)
May-22-12  wordfunph: amigo <TD>,

just to rub salt into the wound, bad joke :)

<Anand, Viswanathan - Gelfand, Boris 1-0 17 E60 King's Indian without Nc3>

http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/chessne...

<TD> cheer up!

May-22-12  wordfunph: <CGB> i think the best way is to declare KID and Grunfeld/Neo-Grunfeld as winners, everyday is Christmas anyway. Chessbookie is for fun and hope you make everyone happy, generosity remains to be the best policy.

Thanks Sir.

May-22-12  brankat: <wordfunph> An incurable optimist :-)
May-22-12  brankat: <Chessgames Bookie> Thank You kindly for the timely and considerate reply.

What's done is done, lets look forward to Action and Fun to come. There will be no shortage of either :-)

May-24-12  technical draw: I owe the loanshark exactly 1,111. But that will change tomorrow.
