37th Chess Olympiad Rd 10: Croatia vs Greece

May-30-06  refutor: good odds on armenia (6:00 pm)
May-30-06  TheoreticalNovelty: Wahoo, even though I bet like a 1000 on Kramnik winning, I still collected a lot of money off of the Bookie!
May-30-06  TheoreticalNovelty: Strange, my profile says Im worth 3k, but when I go to the Bookie page, it says I am worth 6k.
May-30-06  Joshka: Lost a load on India, didn't know Anand was NOT playing, and pumped more money on India for Round 10, before I came here to find he's not playing. Any reason he's NOT playing?
May-31-06  Milo: Yeah, turn off the juice, please. In the long run, nobody's really going to be able to break even with 10% of our money disappearing.

<Joshka>: Anand's not playing?? I am begging to regret the 600 I just put on India.

May-31-06  Joshka: <milo> Yea, I'd rather be betting on individual games. This way we know who's playing, if one guy takes a day off or something, and we are not aware, we're betting blind almost. Think Naka has taken some days off too. Probably others do the same thing.

lostemperor: I gambled and lost! From 2554 to -63. Must be the biggest single loss yesterday. My biggest loss was also on India. I soon have to watch out for them loanshark boys. I hope they know how to treat a client.
May-31-06  Joshka: Kramnik didnt play yesterday!...and I dumped a lot on Russia too!...I was really under the impression these guys are all playing everyday. Rest day, give me a break, with most folks working 12 hour days at times, these guys can't play at least one game per day??.....this is like betting on a baseball game and NOT knowing who's pitching:-).....
May-31-06  Joshka: <lostemperor> Did you also think like me that Anand was playing?? If i had known he was taking a rest, I would have not touched that bet. That's a shame, you took a big hit man.

lostemperor: <Joska> that was just the irony. I already knew Anand wasn't playing and had second doubts about my bet. But like I said in yesterday's post, I had to take risks to get to the leaders, and looked at the ratings which was higher on two boards of India and figured maybe one of those boards might win. I also put money on the tie but that was just 60 bucks. The odds was also better than 1.52 for India to win even after my bet.

I knew that my chances of losing, in the end, will be bigger than winning since taking risks normally results this way. But I'll be back in the summer leg :)

May-31-06  TheoreticalNovelty: Heh, I just made $8500 worth of bets. Hopefully one of them will come through for me...
May-31-06  percyblakeney: I'll avoid bets today, was close to put 1000 on tie in Armenia-China but don't really believe in it. So I'll save the chessbucks for another day...
May-31-06  TIMER: Yesterday I lost 4000 on losing bets, but gained 4000 on good bets to roughly break even!

lostemperor: Yesterday I thought to kick some a$$ :(.
May-31-06  iron maiden: 3-1 on France beating USA seemed like okay odds, as did the over 4-1 on Ukraine winning against Russia.
May-31-06  acirce: Yeah, Ukraine was well over 5 before I put many of my remaining bucks on them.
May-31-06  TIMER: I find these matches much more unpredictable than than the individual games of top players.

Today like yesterday, I risked everything on all the matches, except yesterday I saved myself with a big bet on draw in Kramnik game.

Today there was no game to bet on, so I risked it all on matches, and lost it all! I could have been as high as 17000 if it had all gone my way, instead I expect -3000! It could have been -4000 if Nakamura had lost.

Yesterday I lost several thousand on favourites. Today I basically bet too much against the favourites, except a big bet on India. However that is hindsight, it could just as easily all gone the other way. It is fairly random.

May-31-06  Milo: Well, Anand did play... and draw.
May-31-06  you vs yourself: I gained $384 yesterday, only to lose it all today after betting on the U.S.
May-31-06  suenteus po 147: <you vs yourself> A noble bet, but realistically the best we could have hoped for was a draw. I put a few bucks down on the tie and am cashing in my ticket later today :)
May-31-06  technical draw: I made a little change today. If Denmark/Moldovia had been a tie I would have made it to the top 10. (not bad coming from 400th place).

lostemperor: I'm trying to pull a TIMER stunt (but no illusions for a high ranking):)
May-31-06  you vs yourself: <suenteus po 147: but realistically the best we could have hoped for was a draw> Really? I think you're underestimating our team. We have very strong players representing the U.S. Kamsky on board 1, Nakamura and Kaidanov on boards 2 and 3 are capable of beating any player in any team. France is surprising almost everyone with their performance so far in the olympiad. Other than Bacrot, who's a super-GM, I don't know any other player in the French team.

Btw, congratulations for winning that tournament on yahoo!
